Jerry Hairston Jr. was playing third base for the New York Yankees against the Baltimore Orioles because Alex Rodriguez had the day off. On Monday, Hairston received a lot of unwanted pub after he ruined Andy Pettitte’s perfect game bid.
In the seventh inning, Pettitte still was going strong with his perfect game. But Hairston committed an error on a ground ball with two outs to end the perfect game bid. The next batter, Nick Markakis, hit a single to end the no-hitter.
Pettitte, who has never had a no-hitter in his career, admitted after the game to getting excited about the …read more

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Hideki Matsui came to the rescue. Going against Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Johnson, Matsui hit a solo homer to give the New York Yankees a 2-1 victory.
Both starting pitchers had a successful affair — Andy Pettitte for the Yankees and David Hernandez for the Orioles. Prior to Matsui’s homer, solo home runs by Nick Markakis and Eric Hinske were the only runs on the board.
On the season, Matsui is hitting .264 with 15 homers and 42 RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .367 and 29 runs.

More than a month in the 2009 baseball season, the worst teams in the league are already looking ahead to 2010. Who are the worst of the worst? Here’s a look at the teams that wish they could push the reset button the 2009 baseball season.
5) Baltimore Orioles
Although the Orioles have a handful of very good players on their squad, the team as a whole is heading to another season without a postseason appearance.
4) Cleveland Indians
Before the season started, the Indians were an American League sleeper pick. Now? They just appear as if they are asleep.
3) Pittsburgh Pirates

Koji Uehara Beats the Yankees in Debut

In the offseason, the Baltimore Orioles signed Koji Uehara to a two-year, $10 million deal. After one start, it looks like the Orioles got a bargain. The 34-year-old Japanese born Uehara pitched five impressive innings as he helped the Orioles knock off the New York Yankees for the second straight game to begin the 2009 baseball season.
In his five innings of work, Uehara scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run. Although the Yankees made a push after Uehara had left the game, Baltimore was able to escape with a 7-5 victory.
Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang wasn’t nearly as impressive. …read more
Nick Markakis Gets $66M Extension
January 19, 2009 by Stephen Kersey
Although the Baltimore Orioles weren’t able to land free agent target Mark Teixeira this offseason, they recently gave Nick Markakis an extension to keep him in the fold for the foreseeable future. The 25-year-old Markakis is viewed by many as the team’s best player and a player that can be built around.
The extension for Markakis calls for him to make a little bit more than $66 million over six seasons. There’s also a seventh year of the deal that can be voided by either side, plus incentives that could push the total value of the contract to over $70 million.

Felix Pie Traded from Cubs to Orioles
January 18, 2009 by Stephen Kersey

Not too long ago, Felix Pie was believed to be the future superstar for the Chicago Cubs. But after a few disappointing seasons, the Cubs cut their losses and traded the outfielder to the Baltimore Orioles. With the Orioles, Pie will be given every chance to win a starting job in the outfield.
In return, the Cubs received Garrett Olson, a pitcher, and Henry Williamson, a minor leaguer. Olson started 26 games for the Orioles last season and went 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA. Presumably, he’ll be given a shot to win a starting job but will likely end up in …read more

Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers may have given up in their hope of re-signing Manny Ramirez. If that is the case, Dunn is the next logical option for Los Angeles. He’s not quite as talented but he can replace most of the bop in the middle of the lineup that Ramirez provided.

Angels Drop Out of Teixeira Sweepstakes
December 21, 2008 by Stephen Kersey

A few days ago, we speculated on where Mark Teixeira will end up. That five-team race appears to be down to four teams after the Los Angeles Angels announced that they have rescinded the offer to Teixeira.
The Angels’ offer is believed to have been an eight-year contract worth at least $160 million. Sources indicate that the Angels didn’t believe they were still in the running and didn’t want to waste time on a lost cause.
Now that the Angels have dropped out, the remaining four teams in the running are the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals and the Boston …read more
Mark Teixeira – Where Will He End Up?

1. Boston Red Sox
Even though the Boston Red Sox came out recently and said they won’t be signing Mark Teixeira, don’t count on that being the truth. It was, in fact, an obvious negotiating tactic. Boston is still offering a truck load of money and Teixeira knows he could become a star in Beantown.
2. Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles are desperate to turn around their dying franchise. Mark Teixeira is a hometown kid who grew up as an Orioles fan. Even if Baltimore has to overpay him, it’d be worth it to the organization in terms of making their fans excited …read more
