Andy, a contributor at the excellent Stat of the Day, has started a new blog, 88 Topps Cards. The blog’s mission:
We’re celebrating one of the great classic baseball card sets, 1988 Topps. We’re going through all 792 cards one by one, and for each we’re posting two things: what makes the card awesome, and a cool stat about the player or team featured on the card. The stats are all gleaned from Baseball-Reference.com’s Play Index.
Damn, I wish I’d thought of that…

Somehow I’d missed this earlier. Colorado’s Todd Helton and Boston’s Kevin Youkilis have blogs that they’ve been updating throughout the postseason.
From a recent post by Helton:
I’m told that my teammates appreciate what I’ve contributed, and I hope so. I try not to be overbearing. I try to play as hard as I can, do my job. If it wasn’t for my teammates, I wouldn’t be here.
And an excerpt from Youkilis:

One more perspective to consider as we prepare for the World Series…

A lot of people think Boston Red Sox right-hander Curt Schilling is a blowhard, but he’s always struck me as a reasonably intelligent and inquisitive fellow who isn’t afraid to take risks. Whatever your personal opinions of the man might be, it’s pretty cool that he’s fully embracing the blog as a vehicle for communicating with fans.
What strikes me most about Schilling’s blog is that he “gets it.” If you’re accustomed to the sanitized newspaper version of what goes on at the ballpark, his candor might be a bit disarming:

A lot of people think Boston Red Sox right-hander Curt Schilling is a blowhard, but he’s always struck me as a reasonably intelligent and inquisitive fellow who isn’t afraid to take risks. Whatever your personal opinions of the man might be, it’s pretty cool that he’s fully embracing the blog as a vehicle for communicating with fans.

What strikes me most about Schilling’s blog is that he “gets it.” If you’re accustomed to the sanitized newspaper version of what goes on at the ballpark, his candor might be a bit disarming:

One of the major changes this year has been the need to change some things I do in warming up. My pre-game warm up begins 2:20 minutes before first pitch. That’s a drastic change from years past and it’s mainly due to some of the physical changes I’d always heard happen at 34-40, but never knew until this year.

Another passage:

Overall I felt great physically. The change up got results but I felt like crap throwing it. I threw 14 of them today, out of 60 pitches. Right now My split is in between horrific and terrible, so that’s something else to work on.

I find it utterly fascinating to look at such an unfiltered view of what’s going on inside a player’s head. If MLB is serious about serving its fans, we need more of this. Want us to feel involved? Okay, then, get us involved.

Kudos to Schilling for taking this bold step. And welcome to the blogosphere, #38.
