Justin Duchscherer
Although he’s battled both injury and depression, Justin Duchscherer is a two-time All-Star who could once again reach that level — and he won’t demand a huge contract.

Carlos Delgado
Another guy coming off an injury, Carlos Delgado had 38 homers and 115 homers in 2008. At 37, he may have another year or two of top-level play.

Ryota Igarashi
A pitcher in the Japanese leagues, Ryoto Igarashi has a blazing fastball and very good splitter. He’d help any team’s bullpen right away.

Darren Oliver
Darren Oliver has become an extremely effective reliever. The former starter has been very good over the last two years with the Angels. He’s not a closer but he’s a lefty who can be very valuable in 50 to 60 outings.

]]> Last season, Carlos Delgado was a bright spot for the New York Mets. Now, the Mets will likely have to try to win without Delgado for the next few months after it was learned that the hobbled slugger will require arthroscopic surgery on his right hip.

The exact amount of time Delgado will miss isn’t known at this point. The Mets are expected to put a time frame into place after the surgery is completed on Tuesday. Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees had hip surgery in the offseason and needed a couple of months to be able to return to the lineup, so it’s safe to say Delgado is out for a while.

This season, Delgado was hitting .298 with four homers, 23 RBI and 15 runs scored. Last year, the native of Puerto Rico had a batting average of .271 to go along with 38 dingers, 115 RBI and 96 runs.

The Mets are currently in first place in the NL East with a record of 21-16. However, without Delgado, New York will likely find it difficult to keep the pace with the hard-charging Philadelphia Phillies.

]]> The United States recently lost a game to Venezuela in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Against Puerto Rico, the United States didn’t just lose — they got destroyed. When all was said and done, Puerto Rico had won 11-1 after the mercy rule came into play.

Carlos Beltran and Felipe Lopez hit homeruns for Puerto Rico, while Carlos Delgado had two RBIs and Ivan Rodriguez had three hits. Puerto Rico remains undefeated in the 2009 WBC.

American starting pitcher Jake Peavy got rocked in his two innings of work. He allowed six hits, six homeruns and only struck out one batter. At the plate, the United States only got six hits.

Next up on the WBC schedule, the Americans will play the Netherlands. The loser of that game will be eliminated from the World Baseball Classic 2009.

]]> Billy Wagner of the New York Mets, who never seems opposed to flapping his gums to the media, once again was criticized teammates after a game. Earlier this season, Wagner criticized Oliver Perez. On Thursday, Wagner criticized teammates who didn’t make themselves available to the media.

While Wagner didn’t name any names, he reportedly pointed in the direction where the lockers of Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and Luis Castillo are located. Although those players all are Hispanic, Wagner denied his criticism being directed toward any one race.

Apparently, Wagner wants everyone to talk to the media like he does. After Wagner’s comments about Perez, Mets manager Willie Randolph told Wagner to stop criticizing teammates through the media. Obviously, Wagner didn’t listen.

Perhaps now Wagner will criticize himself through the media. It’d only be fair.
