Reports indicate that David Wells is interested in resuming his big league career as a member of the New York Yankees. The 45-year-old Wells says he’s in good shape and could bolster the Yankees starting rotation.
Hank Steinbrenner says he has pondered the possibility of bringing Wells back to the Yankees, however Steinbrenner admits to not talking to general manager Brian Cashman about the idea.

Last season, Wells pitched for the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 29 combined starts, Wells was 9-9 with a 5.43 ERA. Wells pitched for the Yankees in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003. His best season came in 1998 when he went 18-4 with a 3.49 ERA. In his four seasons with the Yankees, Wells averaged 17 wins per season.

The reason Wells makes a bit of sense for the Yankees is because the team is currently suffering from injury trouble. Phil Hughes, who was expected to be a key contributor this season, is on the disabled list. Ian Kennedy, another young pitcher expected to help carry the load, has been ineffective and is back in the minor leagues. As a whole, the Yankees rank 22nd out of 30 teams in ERA.

Could Wells help out the Bronx Bombers? I’m not sure but one thing we know is that it’d be entertaining.

My preview of the Padres is up at Hardball Times. One issue I touch on is the uncertainty at the back end of San Diego’s rotation:
Last year the Padres brought in Greg Maddux and David Wells. One of those worked out real well, the other not so much. This year it’s Randy Wolf and Mark Prior. The situation is a little different, though, because Maddux basically never misses a start, while Wolf hasn’t made as many as 20 since 2004. As for Prior, my advice is not to think about him at all and hope for a pleasant surprise later in the season. Realistically we’re looking at guys like Shawn Estes, Justin Germano, and Glendon Rusch for that fifth spot. The fact that these aren’t exciting options wouldn’t be a problem except that the rest of the rotation isn’t as good as some people seem to think it is.
