Why I Don’t Trust the BBWAA

The other day, in discussing the Cy Young Award candidates, I mentioned a lack of faith in the writers to vote for the right person. Folks have been asking me about this, and although it’s old hat to me, I suppose it bears repeating:
I will trust the writers to vote for the right person in any given award only after they have done so.

All-Time Gold Glove Team

Speaking of defense, as we were earlier today, the all-time Gold Glove team has been announced. Most of these guys make sense to me, although I’m a little surprised to see Wes Parker at first base over the likes of Keith Hernandez and J.T. Snow.
Then again, I never saw Parker play, so what do I know?
Ichiro Signs Extension, Will Remain in Seattle through 2012

Center fielder Ichiro Suzuki has signed a 5-year, $90 million contract extension that will keep him in Seattle through 2012. I expected him to get somewhere in the $18-20 million per year range on the open market, for 5 or 6 years, so this seems pretty reasonable to me.
Ichiro often draws comparisons to Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and although Gwynn was a much more productive player throughout his career, there is one area in which both players are very similar.
