Hunter Pence has posted his latest blog entry. In it, he talks more about his workout regimen, as well as offering thoughts on the Astros’ recent signing of Darin Erstad:

I am really excited about him joining our team because we brought in another guy who plays the game with the right mentality. Having watched Darin play, he seems like a hard nosed ball player who will do anything to win.

Erstad hasn’t been a productive big leaguer since 2000. I admire and respect my esteemed colleague’s enthusiasm, but I’d be lying if I said I thought Erstad would make much of a difference in Houston this year.

Welcome, Hunter Pence!

Happy New Year, folks. Hope you had an excellent celebration and are recovering well from whatever you did (really, I don’t want to know).

Just wanted to take a moment to welcome Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence to the b5media sports channel. He will be blogging for us at Inside the Ballpark, offering a first-person view of the big-league baseball experience.

I’m looking forward to following Hunter throughout the 2008 season, and I’ve even resolved to cheer for the Astros when they’re not playing my Padres. Anyway, be sure to stop by Hunter’s digs and say hello. Should be fun…

2007 NL Rookie of the Year Poll

You know the drill by now. The question before the court is, Who would get your vote for NL Rookie of the Year and why?

In my mind, this is a two-man race between Milwaukee “third baseman” Ryan Braun and Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Guys like Hunter Pence and Josh Hamilton would have merited serious consideration had they remained healthy all season. Actually, you could make a strong case for Pence anyway.

Similarly, right-handers Yovani Gallardo and Tim Lincecum might have been part of the conversation if they’d been called up a little sooner. Micah Owings? The crazy thing about him is that he adds value as a pitcher and as a hitter.

And then there’s Owings’ teammate, Chris Young. He’ll get some consideration for the 32 homers and 27 stolen bases — very sexy. Young might have as promising a future as anyone among the current crop of rookies, but that .295 OBP is tough to ignore.

So. I ask again: Who do you like, and why?
