]]> Jed Lowrie, who begin the season as the starting shortstop for the Boston Red Sox, underwent surgery on his left wrist. The surgery took place on Tuesday and the 25-year-old will likely be out for at least six weeks.

The surgery was needed to repair cartilage in his wrist. To begin the season, Lowrie was 1-for-18 at the plate with eight strikeouts. After his slow start, he decided to have his wrist repaired. Lowrie originally hurt it last season.

As a rookie last year, Lowrie hit .258 with two homers and 46 RBIs in 81 games. Of his 67 hits, 25 were doubles and three were triples.

With Lowrie out, the starting shortstop for the Red Sox will likely be Nick Green until Julio Lugo is ready to play. Lugo is expected to begin a rehab stint in the minor leagues within the next few days.
