Derek Jeter is Yankees Hits King

Move over Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, there is a new all-time leader in hits for the New York Yankees. With a hit in the third inning on Friday, Jeter broke a tie with Lou Gehrig to become the Yankees hits king.
With two hits on Friday, Jeter now has 2,723 hits.
Said Jeter: “The whole experience has been overwhelming. This is more than I could’ve imagined.”
The 35-year-old Jeter is appears destined to reach the 3,000 hits mark with the Yankees. At his current pace, he’s likely to get his 3,000th hit in the 2011 baseball season.

Dom DiMaggio, Former Red Sox, Dies

Dom DiMaggio, who played for the Boston Red Sox from 1940 to 1953, died on Friday at the age of 92. The younger brother of Joe DiMaggio was nicknamed “The Little Professor” and made the All-Star game seven times (1941, 1942, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952).
In his career, which was partially interrupted due to World War II, had a batting average of .298, an on-base percentage of .383, 87 homers, 618 RBIs, 1046 runs, 308 doubles and 57 triples.
