Even before Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, many fans are already looking toward Game 2. Why? Pedro Martinez will be starting for the Philadelphia Phillies in New York against the Yankees. The future Hall of Famer who has a long history against the Yankees will make that ballgame extremely interesting.
Many experts though the Phillies would go with Cole Hamels in Game 2. However, manager Charlie Manuel said that he wanted to split up his left-handers and thought that Martinez was a good choice to pitch in New York in what promises to be a key contest.

Eric Bruntlett Turns Unassisted Triple Play

Eric Bruntlett found a unique way to end Sunday’s contest between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets. With runners on first and second, Bruntlett caught a liner, stepped on second and tagged out the runner to turn an unassisted triple play. It was only the second time in baseball history that an unassisted triple play ended a ballgame.

Pedro Martinez to Retire?

A few days ago, we gave an update on Pedro Martinez and his injury. Now there is talk from Martinez about possible retiring at the end of the season. Martinez says that he needs to take care of his family – specifically his ill father.

Recovering from a hamstring injury, Pedro Martinez pitched four innings in a simulated game on Wednesday, Martinez, who ended up throwing about 60 pitches, hurt his hamstring in his first start of the 2008 season.
While the New York Mets haven’t put an exact timetable on when Martinez could return to the big league roster, his prognosis sounds more positive than it did a few weeks ago. It’s no possible that Martinez could return by the beginning of June.

Alfonso Soriano
As if being a Chicago Cubs fan isn’t tough enough, it sounds like Alfonso Soriano may be out for a while. Soriano strained his calf making a catch in the outfield. After being helped off the field, Soriano was said to be in a lot of pain. Expect him to be out at least a couple weeks. MRI results on Wednesday will give more information.
