Jorge Posada is hurting again. Earlier in the season, Posada battled a shoulder injury — and he has yet to completely heal. Now there is serious talk that Posada may require season-ending surgery.
Part of the issue involving Posada is his insistence that he play catcher. The New York Yankees have played him at first base and designated hitter, but Posada wants to remain a catcher. With a painful and weakened shoulder, that is a difficult position for Posada to play.

The Yankees are saying Posada will again try to rest his shoulder. If rest doesn’t help out, surgery may be the only option. If Posada undergoes surgery, he not only will be out the rest of the year — he could miss playing time into next season as well. At 36-years-old, there’s even a chance Posada will never fully recover.

For now, Posada will hope and against hope as he looks to playing again this season.

Posada was batting .302 before being shelved. Posada’s problem was catching – specifically, Posada experienced shoulder pain when throwing.

While Posada is now throwing the ball back to the pitcher, he hasn’t started any in-game throwing. That phase of his rehabilitation will begin later in the week. If everything goes as planned, Posada could return to the Yankees in about one week from now.

The Yankees could undoubtedly use Posada’s help. New York is in last place in the AL East with a record of 25-26.

Alex Rodriguez has a strained quadriceps and has now landed on the 15-day disabled list. The Yankees are being cautious with Rodriguez’s injury, however there’s a chance he could miss up to a month.

Rodriguez joined Jorge Posada on the DL. Posada has an injured throwing shoulder that isn’t allowing him to catch. Posada, who went on the DL for the first time in his career, isn’t sure when he’ll be back. The good news is that he doesn’t appear to need season-ending surgery.

Phil Hughes, the Yankees’ 21-year-old starting pitcher, also landed on the DL. He has an injured right oblique muscle. Hughes, even when healthy, has struggled this season. He has an ERA of 9.00 and has a record of 0-4.

Rodriguez, Posada and Hughes could all conceivably be back before the beginning of June. The most series injury seems to be Posada’s injury, but most major ailments have been ruled out.
