Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 12:40 p.m. PT — Hiroki Kuroda looked outstanding in his North American debut. I expected the funky delivery that is characteristic of pitchers who come over from Japan, but the velocity caught me by surprise. He was pumping 93-mph fastballs against the Padres. Micah Owings gets the call for Arizona. He dominated the Rockies in his first start of ‘08 (although he only went 1-for-4 at the plate, LOL).
Reds at Brewers, 5:05 p.m. PT — Like offense? Josh Fogg and David Bush hook up at Miller Park. The lineups will include guys like Ryan Braun, Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder, and Ken Griffey Jr. I’m going to set the over/under on home runs at seven.

Yankees at Royals, 5:10 p.m. PT — Two promising young pitchers square off in this one. Zack Greinke seems to have gotten his career back on track, while Ian Kennedy is still trying to figure out how the Rays beat the snot out of him last week. The Royals are 5-2. Heck, the Orioles are 6-1. And people say the world isn’t going to hell in a handbasket.

Small Sample Hero? Control Freak? Flamethower? Sounds like a comic book convention gone horribly wrong…

Phillies at Reds, 9:35 a.m. PT — Fire up a pot of coffee and sidle on up to the Internet (really, I’d like to see that). Cole Hamels and Bronson Arroyo square off in Monday’s first game. Plus you get a chance to watch Jeff “Offensive Beast” Keppinger in action. Honestly, I always thought that guy could be useful if given the chance, but .435/.480/.826 through the first week? Man, I love small samples. They’ll show you just about anything you want to see.

Mariners at Orioles, 12:05 p.m. PT — I don’t know that this will be a good game to watch, but it could be interesting. First off, you’ve got Carlos Silva hooking up against Daniel Cabrera on the mound. Are there two more different pitchers in the game today? Bob Tewksbury and Steve Dalkowski have retired, right? The other story line, of course, is Adam Jones facing his former team. I still can’t believe Baltimore had the smarts to make that deal.

Braves at Rockies, 5:35 p.m. PT — Colorado has stumbled to a 1-5 start in ‘08. Maybe facing 42-year-old Tom Glavine in their home park will help. You know what else would help? Not hitting .209/.281/.333 as a team. You think?

Happy Monday, folks, and happy watching!

The lead from this article is classic:
Even after signing Jose Castillo on Christmas Eve, the Marlins may not be done giving themselves third base options.
Only in Miami, where the Marlins’ owner has trained his team’s “fans” to expect nothing and like it, could this even be in doubt. Castillo hit .244/.270/.335 for the Pirates in 2007. Huh, so he might not be the answer at third?
Other players being considered include Jorge Cantu and Dallas McPherson. Cantu hit .252/.331/.357 last season for the Devil Rays and the Reds. McPherson didn’t play in 2007 due to injury, but hit .261/.298/.478 the previous [...]
Post from: Knuckle Curve

Straight steal of home. Without question the most exciting play in baseball. The last one I saw came in May 1999, when San Diego’s Eric Owens did it against the Reds’ Brett Tomko.

While perusing my colleague Blake’s poker blog All Poker Addicts, I came across a post about “favorite hands” and it got me thinking (put away the fire extinguisher, my head always does that when I think): what are your favorite plays in baseball? Here are some of mine:

Straight steal of home. Without question the most exciting play in baseball. The last one I saw came in May 1999, when San Diego’s Eric Owens did it against the Reds’ Brett Tomko.

Inside the park home run. This isn’t at the top of my list because a lot of times someone bangs into a wall and can’t get up, which doesn’t really reflect any great skill on the hitter’s part other than the sense to keep running.

Suicide squeeze. I know that generally speaking, this isn’t a good percentage play, but I can’t help myself. When executed properly, a suicide squeeze is just plain fun to watch.

I’m sensing a pattern here. Everything I like involves the potential of a bang-bang play at home plate. How about you — what are some of your favorite types of plays to see when you’re out at the ballpark?

American League

Tigers at Indians, 4:05 p.m. PT — A showdown between two teams tied for first in the AL Central come mid-August? Two outstanding young pitchers (Jeremy Bonderman, C.C. Sabathia)? Dude, you are so all over this one. Here’s the thing I don’t understand about Bonderman: How can he possibly have a 4.75 ERA? Ah, here it is: Since the All-Star break, opponents are batting .344/.379/.603 against him. The kid’s got great stuff, though; someone should be able to fix that.

National League

Let’s see what’s on tap today, shall we…

American League

Tigers at Indians, 4:05 p.m. PT — A showdown between two teams tied for first in the AL Central come mid-August? Two outstanding young pitchers (Jeremy Bonderman, C.C. Sabathia)? Dude, you are so all over this one. Here’s the thing I don’t understand about Bonderman: How can he possibly have a 4.75 ERA? Ah, here it is: Since the All-Star break, opponents are batting .344/.379/.603 against him. The kid’s got great stuff, though; someone should be able to fix that.

National League

Reds at Cubs, 5:05 p.m. PT — The Reds are done, but Tuesday night’s starter, Aaron Harang, deserves some kind of medal for posting an 11-3 record on a team with a .427 winning percentage. Carlos Zambrano goes for the Cubs, who continue to pursue the Brewers for NL Central supremacy. Did I say “supremacy”? That’s probably too strong a word, but you get the idea.

Rockies at Padres, 7:05 p.m. PT — Another fun pennant battle showdown, this time in the NL West. Jeff Francis and Greg Maddux face off in this one. If you enjoy watching pitchers who rely on hitting their spots, you could do a lot worse than watch these two guys. For those interested, I’ve got a more detailed preview of the entire series over at Ducksnorts.

One game? I’ll go with Colorado and San Diego, but I’m biased. If Bonderman is on his game, the Tigers and Indians could be a lot of fun to watch. Enjoy!

I actually understand what the Nats are doing in terms of gutting the big-league team and rebuilding from scratch, but it’s got to be tough as a fan to watch. Still, Anthony and Andrew manage to keep their heads up:
They aren’t historically bad. In a way not even embarrassingly bad. It was a blessing in disguise when everyone (who didn’t follow the team closely) predicted 110+ losses this season.
They might not even lose 100 games.

Here’s what I don’t understand. Remember how we all thought Washington completely fleeced the Reds last summer when they acquired Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for a couple of generic middle relievers and a fringe infield prospect? Well, Kearns is hitting like Austin Powers, and Lopez is doing a fine Neifi Perez impersonation. Meanwhile, the one guy who turned out to be good in the deal, Brendan Harris, was released by the Reds and is now the starting shortstop in Tampa Bay.

My point? Trust me, if I had one, it would go here.

Falling behind here. The Reds have taken Pennsylvania high school catcher Devin Mesoraco with the 15th pick overall. The guys on ESPN2 compared him to the Dodgers’ Russell Martin and noted that Mesoraco is the first catcher taken by the Reds in the first round since Dan Wilson in 1992.
