I seem to be on a Hall of Fame kick lately. Maybe it’s because I actually visited the place this summer. Or maybe there’s not much else going on right now (seriously, don’t make me bust out some transaction haiku on the Darin Erstad and Miguel Olivo signings). Whatever the case, that’s where my head is at, so let’s take a look at another worthy candidate, Rich “Goose” Gossage.

Who Is the Best Lefty Reliever in History?

That’s the question the Baseball Crank attempts to answer. His argument for Billy Wagner is compelling in many respects, although the relative lack of appearances and innings are knocks against him. I think it’s pretty clear that Wagner will be the best before long. Right now, though, I’d probably give the nod to John Franco, with Sparky Lyle getting strong consideration as well. The latter is penalized somewhat for playing in an era that didn’t worship the save statistic to the degree we do now.
