Thursday Quick Hits

Just a few items of note for you this afternoon:

  • Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard won his arbitration case and has been awarded $10 million for 2008. This is the largest amount ever received by a victorious player.
  • You may be aware that my colleague, Hunter Pence, was injured in a freak accident earlier this week. He’s got the details up at his blog. Here’s wishing Hunter a speedy recovery.
  • Another colleague, Albert Bianchi at Dejuiced, informs us that New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes will be giving up a celebratory handshake thing he used to do. I can’t speak to that because I don’t follow the Mets closely, but I will say that the photo Albert chose to accompany his story is priceless. Seriously, if the Mets ever get tired of playing baseball, they might try their hand at putting on a musical.

Ugh. Play some games already. I’m getting bored…

  1. Al Bianchi says:

The Mets can dance if they want to,
But they can’t leave division rivals behind

  2. Geoff Young says:

    If they can’t dance,
then they’re no Mets of mine.

  3. dchase says:

You think Howard will get the $100+ contract he’s aiming for?

“Ugh. Play some games already. I’m getting bored…”

    and amen to that!

  4. Geoff Young says:

Well, he’s worth more than Carlos Lee (and Barry Zito for that matter) in my book, so I don’t see why not.

  5. dchase says:

After Hunter’s 5/$90M.M for his age 33 seasons and beyond, I guess any contract can be justified.

  6. Geoff Young says:

Hunter, Zito… Paying Carlos Silva the same amount as Jake Peavy over the next 4 years doesn’t make much sense to me either. There are a lot of bad contracts out there. IOW, business as usual. ;-)
