New York Mets
The Mets are reportedly thinking about bringing back Martinez. Since he knows the team and the area, he may be willing to go back.

New York Yankees
If the Yankees have a weakness, it’s starting pitching. Martinez can be a lot like Andy Pettitte — a veteran pitcher who isn’t afraid of the pressure.

Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have lost a lot of talent this offseason. Signing Martinez will give the win-now Angels a chance to make noise in the American League.

Justin Duchscherer
Although he’s battled both injury and depression, Justin Duchscherer is a two-time All-Star who could once again reach that level — and he won’t demand a huge contract.

If you aren’t a fan of the New York Yankees, that is probably the case. Here’s a look at some sleeper baseball free agents that can be had this winter.

Justin Duchscherer
Although he’s battled both injury and depression, Justin Duchscherer is a two-time All-Star who could once again reach that level — and he won’t demand a huge contract.

Carlos Delgado
Another guy coming off an injury, Carlos Delgado had 38 homers and 115 homers in 2008. At 37, he may have another year or two of top-level play.

Ryota Igarashi
A pitcher in the Japanese leagues, Ryoto Igarashi has a blazing fastball and very good splitter. He’d help any team’s bullpen right away.

Darren Oliver
Darren Oliver has become an extremely effective reliever. The former starter has been very good over the last two years with the Angels. He’s not a closer but he’s a lefty who can be very valuable in 50 to 60 outings.

Josh Johnson is regarded as one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball. The 6-foot-7 righty is 25 years old and is coming off another stellar campaign. That said, the Florida Marlins may have to trade him.

Why would the Marlins have to trade one of their best players? Economics. He’s two years away from being a free agent and with the Marlins unable to reach a contract agreement with Johnson, they don’t have much of a choice. If they were to put him out on the open market, Florida would have plenty of teams interested.

Last season, Johnson was 15-5 with a 3.32 ERA. In 209 innings of work, he gave up 184 hits while striking out 191 batters. In his career, which began in 2005, he has a record of 34-16 to go along with an ERA of 3.40. There aren’t many pitchers that can match that resume at that career stage — especially considering he plays for a small market team.

What the Marlins may do is head into next season with Johnson on their roster. At the trade deadline, the team could trade him if the playoffs are no longer an option. If the playoffs are an option, they may decide to keep him — for at least the rest of the season. But no matter the plan, Florida will want to either sign him to an extension or eventually trade him before he becomes a free agent.

In 144 games, Scutaro set career-highs in batting average (.282), on-base percentage (.379), slugging percentage (.409), homers (12), RBIs (60), runs (100), doubles (35), walks (90) and stolen bases (14). That was an impressive feat considering that he’s gotten regular at-bats the previous five seasons.

Although he was primarily a shortstop for the Blue Jays, he’s able to play multiple positions. As a result, certain teams are going after him with the idea that he’ll be a full-time player at a different position — such as third base.

Teams interesting in Scutaro include the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. Even though he’s 34, Scutaro is likely to get a multi-year deal worth a good amount of money. It’ll be interesting to see if the native of Venezuela can build off his career year.

While Jason Bay may give him a run for his money, Holliday’s production and potential is likely to cause a team to open up their wallet — very wide.

Here’s a look at possible destinations for Matt Holliday in free agency:

St. Louis Cardinals
Matt Holliday finished the 2009 baseball season with the St. Louis Cardinals. However, since the Cardinals aren’t in a huge market and will have to break the bank to keep Albert Pujols around, many experts believe Holliday will end up elsewhere.

New York Yankees
The Yankees are coming off yet another championship but they are looking to get younger and more athletic. Holliday fits that bill and we all know the Yankees have enough money to make a play at him.

New York Mets
Since Holliday seems to play better in the National League, the Mets might make the most sense. They need another bat and Holliday could finally help the Mets reach the postseason.

Boston Red Sox
Another big money team, the Red Sox need a slugger to replace David Ortiz if Ortiz continues going downhill. For that reason, Holliday makes a lot of sense.

Andrew Bailey is the rare relief pitcher to win Rookie of the Year. But after the 25-year-old stepped up and became one of the best closers in baseball, he definitely deserved the award. He finished 2009 with 26 saves to go along with a 1.84 ERA and a WHIP of 0.88.

In the American League, Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers finished second, while Rick Porcello of the Detroit Tigers finish third. The National League saw J.A. Happ of the Philadelphia Phillies finish second in the voting and Tommy Hanson of the Atlanta Braves finish third.

After establishing residency in the tiny country of Andorra, Chapman is now a free agent. There has already been talk that a big league team may be interested in paying him upwards of $50 million. Which teams are possible destinations for Aroldis Chapman? Let’s take a look:

New York Yankees
The Yankees always like to spend money. Considering that starting pitching depth was their weakness this season, signing Chapman makes a lot of sense if they believe he’s a future starter.

Boston Red Sox
Like the Yankees, the Red Sox can use more starting pitching depth. Boston hasn’t backed down from going after international players and Chapman is yet another intriguing prospect.

New York Mets
The Mets need another top of the line pitcher if they hope to become playoff contenders in the National League. Plus, their pockets are deep enough to snag Chapman.

Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have one factor that may make Chapman happy — warm weather. Chapman already said he’s not a fan of the cold. Oh and yeah, the Angels need more starting pitching help.

Florida Marlins
It’s an extreme longshot but the Marlins would be able to keep Chapman close to Cuba. Plus having Chapman on board would likely draw more fans to their ballpark, which is always a concern for the Marlins.

Last year, Dye didn’t live up to expectations with the White Sox. He hit only .250 with 27 homers and 81 RBIs. In 2008, he hit .292 with 34 homers and 96 RBIs.

Throughout Dye’s career he has had many ups and downs. When teams take a look at him during the offseason, he may land a big contract from a team that hopes that Dye has a few more of those up seasons.

There’s even a possibility that Dye will return to the White Sox. He’s a popular player in Chicago and the team will likely have a need for either an outfielder or a DH.

At 35, Dye probably won’t be able to land a long-term contract. That said, getting or three-year contract isn’t out of the question.

The New York Yankees are the 2009 champions of baseball. With a 7-3 victory in Game 6 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Yankees won the 27th World Series title of their history.

Hideki Matsui, who was named the World Series MVP, was the big bat in New York’s lineup in Game 6. He drove in six of their seven runs on the night. He started things off with a two-run blast in the second inning. In the third, he hit a two-run single. Finally, in the fifth inning, Matsui hit a two-run double.

Getting the win was Andy Pettitte. In 5.2 innings of work, he gave up three earned runs. Mariano Rivera got the final five outs to cement his legacy as the best closer in the history of baseball.

For the Phillies, it was close but no cigar. They put up a great fight in making it back to the World Series, however they just didn’t have quite the talent that the Yankees boast in nearly all facets of the game.

After an offseason that saw the Yankees spend hundreds of millions of dollars to bring a winner back to the Big Apple, the only thing that can be said is mission accomplished.

If you didn’t know Chase Utley before the start of the 2009 World Series, you know him now. The Philadelphia Phillies second baseman hit two more homers in Game 5 to power the Phillies past the New York Yankees by a final count of 8-6.

After Alex Rodriguez put the Yankees on the board first in the top of the first inning via an RBI double, Utley smashed a three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning. In the seventh inning, Utley hit a solo homer to give the Phillies a 7-2 lead.

Utley now has five homers in the World Series, which ties Reggie Jackson for the all-time World Series record. On the night, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, three runs and four RBIs.

Despite Utley’s power display, the Phillies had to hold their breath near the end of the contest. Rodriguez had a two-run double in the eighth inning to make the score 8-4. Later in the inning, Robinson Cano’s sac fly made it 8-5.

In the ninth, the Phillies decided to turn to Ryan Madson instead of Brad Lidge — who has given up three runs in the previous night. Madson got in a jam but got Derek Jeter to ground into a double play and then struck out Mark Teixeira to end the inning.

The World Series now heads to New York for Game 6 with the Yankees up 3-2. The Phillies are a longshot to win both in New York but as this team proved in Game 5, they still have a lot of fight left.
