Zack Greinke – Comeback Kid

April 14, 2008 by Stephen Kersey

Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals pitched yet another gem on Monday. The 24-year-old right-hander pitched a five-hitter against the Seattle Mariners to pick up his third win of the season and lower his ERA to 0.75.

For those unfamiliar with the Greinke story, it’s a story about a fallen star who has now found his way back on the right path. Greinke was a star high school pitcher who was a first rounder in the 2002 draft. Between his high school success and his current success, Greinke had to overcome both depression and social anxiety disorder. He missed almost the entire 2006 season as he dealt with his illnesses.

Last season, Greinke started to show the promise on the pitching mound that had him being compared to Bret Saberhagen just a few seasons earlier. Currently, Greinke appears totally in control on and off the mound.

For a good read on the on Greinke’s history, check out this exclusive interview. If you want to hear a Greinke interview, Deadspin has the audio. While he comes off a bit odd in his interview, he’s definitely one of the best stories of 2008.

that photo could be just about any white dude in KC uniform though ;)

but his stuff is unreal, hope he has better health / consistency then Sabertooth tiger though.

  2. Geoff Young says:

If the Royals are to have any hope going forward, they need big contributions from Greinke and Alex Gordon. Glad to see Greinke is back on the right track both personally and professionally.

I think Dayton Moore’s done a wonderful job so far in KC, turning what looked like a abosalutely hopeless situation quickly back into one that at least looks like it has some hope.

they’re taking a lot of good low risk high reward moves. they’re getting much better development. they’re even drafting better. amazing what a half competent GM can do.
