Writing about video games and the industry that develops, publishes, markets and plays them wasn't always a passion for Joel, who started his career as a news correspondent for The Manila Chronicle in 1995. Despite his interest in video games early in life, it only bloomed when he convinced his wife to play the Philippines' first MMORPG, Ragnarok Online.

It may be time for me to revisit some massively multiplayer online games that I used to play. How do I know when it’s time? When there’s an update, of course! So what’s new in World of Kung Fu, an MMORPG of epic proportions from Vestgame Entertainment? According to Game Industry News, Vestgame is launching a new server for World of Kung Fu this December. This bodes well for the game since it can only mean one thing—it’s getting bigger … and hopefully better. Here’s an excerpt from the story: In order to satisfy the demands of World of Kung Fu fans and enhance the game stability for players in different regions, Vestgame Entertainment has decided to open a new server in Seattle at the beginning of December. MMOtaku turned two years yesterday, November 29th, and I was oblivious to it, mostly because I had been checking out so many new updates to the online gaming industry, not just of Asia but of the entire world. For those who remember MMOtaku’s humble beginnings, it started out focusing on massively multiplayer online games coming out of Asian MMO powerhouses like South Korea and China. Now, its thrust has evolved to encompass even online games from Europe and North America. What’s an blog anniversary posting without some sort of reminiscing? Here’s a look back at several MMOtaku posts that have piqued the interest of most of its readers: Perfect World Tideborn [Read more] [Read more]

Review: G1cannon’s Atlantica Online Wisdom

It’s rare to see a blog dedicated to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Atlantica Online that covers its very important facets. But then again, that’s probably what Atlantica Online Delphi Server player G1cannon is banking on when he launched his blog, Atlantica Online Wisdom, in October 2009. In the blog, G1cannon has touched on a number of topics that may help Atlantica Online players better enjoy their experience in the game. I take special interest in his research on the recently introduced Jackpot License, which allows players to accumulate loot through the Item Obtaining Window for one day and eventually decide whether to acquire all the items or jackpot one particular item and get a larger quantity by sacrificing... [Read more]

Unbelievable? Yes, I know. It’ll be easier to believe the figure if you consider China’s population of about 1.3 billion and the number of titles its online games industry churns out and publishes every year. According to China-based online games portal 17173, quoting news website Sina and statistics released by the China Internet Network Information Center, China has 69.31 million players of online games, a figure that is 24.8 percent higher than last year. The report said large-scale casual game and massively multiplayer online role-playing game users account for 67.9 percent and 61 percent, respectively, of the total. What may come as a surprise is the large number of female gamers at about 26 million, or 38.9 percent of the total... [Read more]
