Dungeon and Fighter: Side-scrolling fun

I can’t understand the appeal of two-dimensional side-scrolling games in this age of 3D and massively multiplayer online games. I mean, going to arcades from time to time, bashing the heads in of Street Fighter dudes Ken and Ryu being controlled by your best bud is cool, but I don’t see how it compares with logging into a great MMORPG and wreaking havoc on both players and monsters with your best tanker bud by your side.
Apparently, though, on this side of the world, people still find joy in 2D side-scrollers. This is probably why Neople’s Dungeon & Fighter, a 2D side-scrolling online action game, has been enjoying good following, 160,000 players strong, since its launch in Korea in August 2005.
After thoroughly captivating the minds of Koreans, Dungeon & Fighter is now set to conquer the hearts of another nation of people: the Chinese.
Tencent Holdings Limited, one of China’s leading providers of Internet and mobile value-added services, has obtained the rights to exclusively operate Dungeon & Fighter in China.
The game, according to developer Neople and publisher Samsung Electronics, carries a strong classic arcade game style and a variety of gameplay modes and tasks. Players can combat in solo or in groups to advance to higher levels—all these while enjoying the exciting action experience supported with a rich offering of functional and decorative items.
Whew! That was a mouthful. Why don’t we just watch these videos of the game that will debut in China within the year.

Dungeon & Fighter has got to be one of the best games of this genre and definitely deserves a lot more attention than it’s getting. It’s great to see it gaining popularity enough to start up in China. Maybe – hopefully! – a North American release is next in line.
