I survived Father’s Day, MMORPG style

I had a very busy day, and boy am I dog tired. By busy, I mean busy in-game. Well, what did you expect on a sloooow weekend? Speaking of weekends and Father’s Day, they were terrible, at least for me, and only in-game. Darn, I think I’m lapsing into that habit again of switching the real world with the virtual world. Anyway …

The weekend started off fine, with my corporeal self back in Palo, Leyte, where the larger-than-life statue of American war hero General Douglas MacArthur stands. I played Perfect World with the wife for several hours until we both got tired of it (which was quite unusual, because we play for hours on end without tiring of the game) and decided to hit the sack.

The next day, a Saturday, things started going awry. My brother-in-law’s computer, which I use to play Perfect World (because the other computer is often occupied by my wife and because the bro’s computer only has one game installed), crashed several times before I called it quits. Instead of bugging Joyce to vacate the conjugal computer, I dragged the other computer outdoors, poured lighter fluid all over the damned thing, and torched it.

No, seriously. I tried looking for whatever’s wrong with the computer, but my only diagnosis is a weak motherboard battery. It turned out that the video card was shocked because its cooling fan had not been working for some time. Egad! No wonder the video was crappy, even at the lowest settings.

That wasn’t the only thing that went wrong this weekend. My Perfect World clan also lost a major territorial battle. It’s nothing new, losing I mean, so it’s really just a passing thing. Yes, really.

What really robbed my weekend—and Father’s Day for that matter—of any fun was the fact that I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted to, even with my daughter out on a trip to the beach and her mom busy with most house chores. Why? Because I spent the better half of the day trying to make my character move faster than the onboard video system of the busted computer would allow.

Well, I guess what I’m really trying to say is, “Happy Father’s Day” to all the fathers out there.
