We interrupt MMOtaku’s regularly scheduled posts for a public service announcement. For those who are unaware, the Philippines has recently been hit hard by Typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana), claiming hundreds of lives and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. The tragedy has sparked in the hearts of Filipinos and various international communities the spirits of mercy and sympathy, prompting some to take action by raising funds and other forms of aid for the victims.
Yesterday, Digital Media Exchange Inc., an online games publisher in Southeast Asia, launched its own fund-raising drive for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy:

The slogan “because our community doesn’t end online” is a call to action to all gamers to reach out and help in rescue and relief efforts by donating ePoints. The portal is not limited to gamers, however, as anyone can sign up for a mobiusonline account and utilize several different payment methods, such as credit cards through PayPal, prepaid cards through mobius cards, online through LoadCentral, etc. in order to donate funds.
“DME is eager to join the relief effort by encouraging our employees to give what they can,” said Scott Countryman, chief executive officer of DME. “More importantly, we are encouraging our millions of registered users across the region, as well as our business process outsourcing clients (via PayPal) to use mobiusonline to conveniently enable donations. One hundred percent of the net revenue from these donations will go immediately and directly to the coordinated relief efforts organized by the Red Cross.”
The response from the existing gamer community has been quite positive as shown on the online counter running on the website. Majority of the donations have been in small increments, but they are coming in steadily. To date, mobius united has raised Php 23,180.40 through contributions from its online community since it began the donation drive on October 1st, 2009. This just goes to show that every little bit goes a long way if people combine their efforts towards achieving one goal.
To donate, just go to the mobius online web page that has been set up to accept donations and follow the step-by-step procedure. Gamers unite!
