Hire me, The9! Hire me

No, that’s not a serious plea. I don’t think I’ll fit in well in the China-based online games giant, despite having a Chinese surname, unless they’re in need of someone who looks nearly Chinese, loves to play online games, writes about online games, and can speak fluent English.
Actually, what brought that on was news that The9 would be opening its doors to 1,000 new employees within the year. Many thanks to ever-reliable online games portal 17173 for breaking the news.
Here’s what they have to say about it:
Chinese leading game operator The9 Inc. announced today that it has launched a recruitment …read more

Wrath of the Lich King launch postponement untrue, says The9

At the end of 2008, The9, operator in China of the hit Western massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, was plagued by news that a bootleg copy of its latest update, Wrath of the Lich King, had somehow made it to the Internet.
The issue ended in a positive note, with The9 issuing a clarification that the Internet links that supposedly pointed to the Wrath of the Lich King client had been removed and that the Chinese government was still reviewing the content of the World of Warcraft update.
Now, rumors are again hounding The9, this time on the supposed …read more

It’s a February 17 debut in China for Lord of the Rings Online

Some of you may not be surprised by this tidbit, but I’ve got to admit, it has blown away a considerable chunk of my brain. Seriously now, the announcement that The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar will soon be hitting the computer screens of China’s millions of online games fanatics is definitely great.
Here’s the juicy tidbit as only China-based online games portal 17173 can put it:
Lord of the Rings Online will enter its first beta test on February 17 in China. What brings it back to China? Our reporter recently conducted an interview with Zhang Dong, project …read more

Aion tops list of 20 Most Voted New Games in China

Yes, it’s a big thing, to answer that nagging question, “What’s the big deal with Aion coming out on top?”, doing the rounds of your noggin. Well, if the news means nothing to you, it simply means you don’t know about the friendly competition between online games developers in China and those in Asian MMORPG capital South Korea.
I remember publishing an article on MMOtaku that detailed an escalating industry “war” between massively multiplayer online games developers in the two countries.
Here’s an excerpt from that story:
Here’s old news that’s still relevant today: Korean MMOs are losing out in China. According to …read more

MMORPG: The most favored game genre in China

MMORPG: The most favored game genre in China

Gee, why am I not surprised? Seriously now. I’m really not surprised that massively multiplayer online role-playing games is still the preferred genre of online games fanatics despite the fact that popularity of online fighting or battle games and music and dance games is picking up.
Here’s the lowdown from China-based online games portal 17173:
According to The Eighth China Online Game Market Survey, most Chinese players rated MMORPG as their favorite game genre, no matter their ages. For players whose age fall between 19 and 25, the percentage is lower, at about 78.3 percent. They are more for online battle games.

Yuyan Online’s Taiwan release looms

Yuyan Online’s Taiwan release looms

Well, “looms” is a bit strong a word for the upcoming release of Yuyan Online, a 2.5D massively multiplayer online role-playing game from Storm Entertainment, in Taiwan since the word pertains to an event that is about to happen.
Truth is, Yuyan Online won’t be released in Taiwan anytime soon. Here’s the lowdown from China-based online games portal 17173:
Chinese game developer Storm Entertainment has announced a cooperation agreement with International Games System, a developer of arcade hardware and software, and operator of online games. Under the agreement, Storm will license its first MMORPG, Yuyan Online, to IGS for operation in Taiwan. …read more
