Happy Halloween from MMOtaku!

I’m sure you’re probably tired of people wishing you a Happy Halloween, but I just have to say it since I’m really not used to it coming from a country that doesn’t celebrate it. Oh, we also mark Halloween, especially the thousands of massively multiplayer online game junkies, since this holiday is an integral part of MMOs all over the world.
For one, it’s one of the best holidays to launch events. I just wish that online game developers and publishers would come up with better gimmicks than simple bash-this-monster-and-get-this-item or open-this-box-and-get-a-random-item-that-is-totally-useless events. I mean, come on, guys! Fire up those …read more

WoW Expansion Still Under Review In China

It has been almost a year since the worldwide launch of World of Warcraft’s expansion Wrath of the Lich King, but the China hub, hosted by NetEase, has yet to implement it. No surprise there, true, but if the company wishes not to end up the way executives of The9, the game’s previous license holder, did, it is highly recommended they just agree with whatever the Chinese governments wants to implement in the game so it can be patched … asap!
An official of China’s Ministry of Culture told online games portal 17173 recently that they were still reviewing NetEase’s application …read more

With Halloween just around the corner, one would expect to find all sorts of events in your favorite massively multiplayer online games. Runes of Magic is no exception. It has, like all other MMOs, succumbed to the pressure of launching its own set of events for one of the most celebrated holidays in the world.
Before the stroke of midnight today, October 31st, the Runes of Magic Pumpkin Festival will be launched. Gee, I didn’t know pumpkins were a staple in Taborea. Going back to the topic, well, Taborea and all its denizens will bear witness to the birth of, get …read more

Happy Birthday, Atlantica Online!

Finally, Atlantica Online, our favorite massively multiplayer online role-playing game with a twist has turned one year old, and NDOORS Interactive, publisher of the game, is unfurling the red carpet for us players with a month-long event.
For starters, all characters above level 20 and is logged on at 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time will receive a special gift. What this gift is, we still don’t know. It better be “special”!
Well, if the gift doesn’t cut it, there’s always the 200-percent experience point bonus time for the entire first week of November. So break out those mercenaries you’ve been keeping in …read more

Post-Apocalypse Halloween in Fallen Earth

Fallen Earth LLC, developer of self-titled massively multiplayer online game Fallen Earth, has just announced the winners of its second annual post-apocalyptic Halloween Costume Contest.
With the chance to show off their imagination, Fallen Earth players gave their all in exploring the wasteland of the area previously known as the Grand Canyon to submit a costume based on the six factions featured in the game—Children of the Apocalypse (CHOTA), Traveler, Vista, Enforcer, Lightbearer and Tech.
Of course, the contest eyed a player’s creativity, so it was only natural that the best submissions were determined in three different categories—Most Original Setting, Most Accurate …read more

Shareholders Sue The9 Over WoW Losses

Talk about adding insult to injury. After losing the license to World of Warcraft and failing to come out with another hit massively multiplayer online role-playing game, China-based online games operator The9 has been sued by its shareholders for allegedly violating the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 by making inaccurate statements about its finances between November 15th, 2006 and July 15th, 2009.
Oh, and we’re not talking about some law in China but the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the law governing the secondary trading of stocks, bonds and the like in the United States of America.
High-profile law firm Coughlin Stoia …read more

I know you’re begging to ask what the big deal is with newsletter subscriptions and how they are linked to getting MMOre Power in an MMO setting. All right, let me go straight to the point. Changes In Aeria Games’ DragonSky

Ah, here’s some bit of news that I missed last week, the one about changes in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game DragonSky, published in North America by Aeria Games. First off, I’d like to apologize for this oversight, courtesy of my ongoing beef against the online games publisher’s downloader.
Before I give you details about the changes in DragonSky, I’d like to share information regarding my dilemma in trying—and I do place a lot of emphasis on TRYING—to download any client from Aeria Games, and would like to find out whether others are encountering this as well.
The trouble starts when …read more

DC Universe Online Presents Bizarro

How’s this for a Halloween gimmick? In line with its monthly introduction of the cast of characters for upcoming massively multiplayer online game DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment has just revealed the newest addition to the title’s growing roster, Bizarro.

Bizarro indeed needs no mask to scare pesky children on a trick-or-treat spree on Halloween. For those unfamiliar with this Frankenstein’s Superman, Bizarro is a fictional supervillain that appears in comic books published by DC Comics.
As a testament to the popularity of Bizarro, his name, however fictitious it may be, is often used to describe anything that uses twisted logic …read more
