NBA Obsessed

Allen Iverson fits in

NBA Obsessed takes you into the hit and run game of NBA Basketball.

Allen Iverson gets a Michael Curry hug after game winner against Clippers

Allen Iverson a Piston.

Say it over slowly. Aaallleeennn IIIVvveerrsssoonnn aaa Pppiiiissstttooonnn. There, does that feel better?

Yeah, he is trying to fit in and be a good teammate. The Pistons are all about the no star concept. Joe D realized he could win with a bunch of good players or near great players without the superstars. Did he not want superstars? Heck no, he wants them bad, but they are hard to come by and even harder to harness.

Bring in Allen from stage left or Denver. AI wants a title. He can taste it. What better way to go for one than to fit in on a team that goes to the conference finals every year.

This team is the future for Rodney Stuckey, but the present for AI. Joe D may not give him a future in Detroit. His contract is worth too much. AI must win now, so no sacrifice is too great.

If Iverson is less spectacular, he’s also more intriguing than he’s been in a while. For a while he became so wrapped in controversy that we forgot about what he did right. He’s the shortest player among the top 10 career scoring leaders. He was picking himself off the floor and signing up for more punishment long before Dwyane Wade made an ad campaign out of it.

Allen Iverson is now just one of the guys. His presence also makes the Pistons a more compelling story. They aren’t just the same cast of characters we’ve been watching since 2004, give or take a Ben Wallace. And Iverson is trying to do what so many have said he could not: sacrifice for the good of the team. That presents a paradox: To get his place in history, he’ll have to give up his place in history.

    thats my dawg.

  2. Ryan says:

Is it just me or do the Pistons seem like a more efficient team without Rip?

Still hoping we can trade him to get a quality big for the stretch run. I like Rip a lot, but I’m not sure he will gel with Stuck.

  3. james says:

Haved tried to tell all my friends that the old guard is slow and can’t get used to AI, but the young guys… a la Stuckey, Maxiell, Afflalo, Amir, they all play fast and love playing with AI.

Don’t count out the need for Rip in the playoffs when the game goes more half court.

and in other news… why so many posts about the pistons? this is nbaobsessed not detriotobsessed ya know ;)

  5. james says:

Sorry, my main obsession is with the Pistons. Is there another team you would want to hear about other than the Pistons? It is hard to write about them all.

  6. slaughterfish24 says:

ok. talk about the magic instead. anyway, iverson is totally not the guy the pistons wanted him to be. he was better off with the nuggets. the pistons are probably thinking that they should have never traded away billups. good trade for the nuggets, not for the pistons. plus, back in 2004, ben wallace should have been suspended the whole season, not artest.

  7. james says:

Billups is on the downhill, but his game will help the Nuggetts.
AI gives the Pistons more speed and if they give him up it is a 22 million dollar boost to the salary cap.
Big Ben never slugged anyone in the stands.
The Magic are awesome! Love watching them play. They are definitely one of the top teams in the East with Cleveland and Boston. They have moved ahead of the Pistons.

  8. Ryan says:

At the rate the Stones are going, a 7th seed would be lucky.

Curry can’t figure out that SMALL BALL is not working!!

Curry needs to acquire a backbone and tell RIP or AI to come off the bench. If not, this season is looking a lot like the Tigers 08 season

  9. james says:

    How right you are, Ryan.
Ahh, the struggles of the rookie coach. Didn’t we know this when he was hired? Can Curry handle being not liked?
