Dwight Howard can’t even dunk the ball with Dirk Nowitzki holding on to him

Ouch! Ooooover rrrrraaaated. OOOOOoooover RRRRrrrrated.

Dwight Howard? Come on, what are you talking about?

Fantasy Hoops, my young man. Not real hoops. Hey, who wouldn’t want Dwight in Real Hoops? You know, like the NBA. He is spectacular. No, he is Superman.

Superman, (or should we call him Ironman because he has never missed a game in his entire career) averaged a mind-boggling 14.2 rebounds, 20.7 points (on 60% shooting), and 2.2 blocks per game last season. As a point of comparison, Shaq never averaged 14 boards a contest in a given season, and Timmy Duncan never averaged 13. In fact, since 1980, there have been only three other players to average over 14 rebounds and 20 PPG in the same season: Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Not bad a sign when you are keeping Hall-of-Fame Company as a 22-years-old.

He does all of this in spite of still having few moves around the basket. What is he going to do if someone teaches him some moves?

But you said Dwight Howard is overrated?

You are not listening. Fantasy Hoops, Not NBA hoops.

In Fantasy Hoops there is very little relation to winning basketball. In fact, one of my favorite Fantasy Hoop players was Chris Weber early in his career. He would amass enormous stats, but win few games. Partly because he played little defense and partly because he played on bad teams.

So what is wrong with Dwight’s Fantasy Hoop game?

Well, you have to take into account a couple of his glaring deficiencies. He can’t shoot free throws, much like Shaq or Wilt Chamberlain. And at times he has stone hands and makes bad ball decisions.

The despicable free-throw percentage (he actually shot a lower percentage from the line {59%} than he did from the field), combined with the league-leading 11 attempts per game, is an anchor than will sink your team in roto-leagues. In addition, the turnovers are a killer.

So don’t waste a high pick on Dwight in your Fantasy Hoop draft.

Of course, Dwight Howard is not totally worthless, so if you can get him cheap, go for it.

Sometimes Dwight Howard as Superman uses the rim as a launching pad!

Team USA is built for versatility and speed. It is not built for size. That is why so much will be riding on the health of Dwight Howard. He will be the lone really big guy.

Dwight Howard fractured his sternum in the playoffs against the Pistons. He thought it was a bruise.

The Olympic team added Tyson Chandler to the roster for some insurance.

Howard probably will be bringing along the Superman cape that he wore when he won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest earlier this year, cementing his role as the best, most popular big man in the league today.

As the only true center on the USA Basketball 12-man roster — and the one who missed the earlier minicamp recovering from a fractured sternum — Howard is going to need all the special powers he can muster.

If Superman gets hurt, then hopefully he can still play through it, because there will not be a lot of size left on the team to put in the game.

Foul trouble or another injury for Howard could cause a real problem, leaving the USA vulnerable against the better, more physically imposing teams. Team USA lost to Greece during the 2006 World Championships because it couldn’t handle a more physical team.

If Dwight Howard stays healthy and out of foul trouble, it will be an amazing Olympic team.

Today, he is expected to be the anchor, the foundation from which this team will revolve. Players such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade will provide the points and pizzazz. They will swirl around the perimeter like bees on defense. They will dazzle opponents with fast breaks so fast that heads will spin.

Yet if it all goes right, it will be Howard, mostly alone in the middle, who will make it all possible, enabling the USA to reclaim its rightful spot atop the basketball world. Howard still has the original USA Dream Team Wheaties box that his father gave him after the 1992 Olympics. Howard was 6 years old then.

Rasheed Wallace is still smiling, standing next to Kevin Garnett. Sheed knows it is a 7 game series and he will get his chance.

In a game that Boston had to have, it had. Boston could not afford to lose game 1, or even to lose game 2. Until the Celtics can prove to themselves that a road victory can be had in the playoffs, they need to win at home.

The Celtics will get their chance to win on the road in games 3 and 4, but they had better not be looking ahead or the Pistons will steal game 2 on the parquet floor and put the Celtics in a huge hole.

Kevin Garnett had 26 points and nine rebounds and Paul Pierce scored 22 points Tuesday night to lead Boston to an 88-79 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Celtics’ 15th straight home win.

Kendrick Perkins had 10 rebounds and Rajon Rondo added 11 points and seven assists for Boston, which earned home court through the playoffs with a league-best 66-16 regular season record. The Celtics rode that advantage to seven-game series victories over Atlanta and Cleveland and held serve in the opener against Detroit.

It has been a while since Detroit played eliminating Orlando in 5 by playing the hack a Dwight Howard and reducing Superman to mortal “need work on my free throws” man. The rust showed.

In the third quarter alone — when teams in close games need to make a move — here was Chauncey Billups losing his dribble and then throwing it away, here was Rip Hamilton stripped, here was Tayshaun Prince missing a lay-up when Kevin Garnett contested him at the rim, here was Antonio McDyess throwing the ball away, here was Rip stripped again. The team with all the experience, Detroit, committed seven turnovers in that third period.

Seven turnovers?

“That basically blew the game open,” Flip Saunders said.

So the Boston Celtics won the game they had to by playing inspiring defense and Kevin Garnett had a great day, of more concern to the Pistons was the fact that Rajon Rondo outplayed Chauncey Billups (is his hamstring really back to normal?) and Rasheed Wallace did not wake up from his nap.

Fear not, Pistons fans, Rasheed has been here many times with Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and a healthy or unhealthy Chauncey Billups. Losing game 1 on the road will not rattle them.

It was to be expected with Boston’s extra loud home crowd that Boston would get off to a high energy start.

Let’s see if the Pistons can steal game 2 on Thursday.

Superman had 26 points and 22 rebounds against the New York Knicks.

The Orlando Magic beat the Knicks 118 to 92 on Saturday night.

Surprising Orlando continues to lead the Southeast Division. Yes, there is a Southeast Division. It is very weak, with the Wizards, Hawks, Bobcats, and Heat, but the Magic do lead the division. Orlando, by the way, is the only team above .500 in the Division.

It was a super performance by Dwight Howard playing for the shorthanded Magic.

Missing injured guards Jameer Nelson and Keyon Dooling, the Magic used only eight players until the last 4:50. All five starters scored in double figures, and three topped 20 points. Hedo Turkoglu had 25 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and Rashard Lewis had 22 points and seven rebounds. source

Get this, Howard has 52 double doubles. Fifty two! That is amazing and leads the NBA.

Even more incredible are the seven 20/20 games (20 points and 20 rebounds). Do you how hard it is to even have 20 rebounds?

Dwight’s game just keeps improving. If he can add a consistent mid-range jumper to his game, then you will have to start talking MVP possibilities.

The Pistons were able to play defense on one guy.

Uhh, one guy?

Yeah, they held Dwight “Superman” Howard to eight points on 2 for 9 shooting with 5 turnovers.

Nice, what happened?

The Pistons lost to the Magic 103 – 85.

How could they lose?

They forgot to play defense on the other 4 guys.

“I am disappointed, (the players) are disappointed and the fans are disappointed,” coach Flip Saunders said after the Orlando Magic came into The Palace on Wednesday night and laid a 103-85 whipping on the Pistons. “We didn’t need to come out and lay an egg like that.”

The Magic shot holes in the Pistons’ 10-game winning streak with a barrage of 3-point shots. They knocked down 13-of-20 on the night, nine of the first 12. source

Apparently the Pistons have the magic powers of a chicken and can lay eggs.

The NBA just gets weirder all the time.

Anyway, the Magic just kept pouring in the 3’s.

Bogans, Rashard Lewis (20 points) and former Piston Maurice Evans (16 points) combined to make 11 of 13 triples and the Magic won at The Palace for the first time in eight tries.

“They were hot, man, hot, hot, hot,” Pistons guard Chauncey Billups said. “Give them credit, they came in here and took it to us. No excuses.”

Was Chauncey singing when he said this?

Oh, my. What could happen next?

Leave it to the All-Star break to break momentum.
