NBA Obsessed

Tyler Hansbrough forget about it

NBA Obsessed takes you into the hit and run game of NBA Basketball.

There are many that believe Tyler Hansbrough will never be a big time pro.

Despite all of his success in Chapel Hill, Hansbrough is hardly considered a lock to reach stardom at the NBA level for several reasons. The 6′9″ power forward is somewhat undersized for his position and lacks the length and explosion to make up for his less than ideal stature. Although he has been remarkably productive in college, Hansbrough is viewed as a player with little upside and is close to being a finished product.

Fans that only follow the college game fail to understand the difference between a player built for college and a player built for the NBA.

Adam Morrison of Gonzaga and J.J. Redick of Duke battled it out a couple years ago for the NCAA scoring title and the National Player of the Year Award and were both lottery selections in the 2006 NBA Draft, only to find minimal success early in their NBA careers.

NBA athletes are explosive, fast, strong, or have to have some kind of unusual edge. It is hard to succeed at the NBA level and be a great basketball player, but not a great athlete. It is even harder if you are undersized.

The real kicker is that so few positions open up each year in the NBA and players from all over the world are competing for those jobs.

As always, any NBA Basketball related comments are welcome.

On the other hand, somehow I’d rather take my chances with a guy like this than a raw guy with just potential in the draft.

I think we’ve seen that work horses have proven useful to many teams. Paul Millsap, Craig Smith and Carl Landry are examples of such people. Sure they were taken in the second round but guys like Landry and Millsap should very well have been first round talent. I see the same potential for Tyler.
