No no not the rapper Nelly but Coach Don Nelson who used to coach the Dallas Mavericks a few years ago until he handed Avery Johnson the coaching reins. A Boston Celtic in his playing days, Nelson saw more individual success in his career as a coach, being one of the winningest coaches in basketball history.

The Warriors hiring of Nelson is actually a return to an old team for him as he coached the Warriors from 1988 to 1995. With Nelson back, this could be a good sign for the Warriors since the last time they made the playoffs was back in 1994 when he was the coach. The past few years saw the Warriors retooling their roster, especially the Baron Davis acquisition, in hopes of receiving a post season berth. Jason Richardson promised a playoff berth this coming season so this upgrade in coaching talent might just help make that happen. Though personally, I don’t expect them to make it again this year, especially since they gave up some leadership by trading Derek Fisher for 3 young guys.
