Automatix is a powerful scripting application that helps streamline the installation of commonly used (and sometimes difficult to install) applications. Automatix (in my opinion) is most useful for Ubuntu because of the lack of installed codecs that Ubuntu comes with out of the box. Automatix has made some major improvements along the way and now has 15 different categories to allow the one click install of: burning and ripping, chat clients, codecs and plugins, commercial software, drivers, email clients, eyecandy, file sharing, media players, miscellaneous, office, programming tools, utilities, virtualization, and web browsers.

Automatix has drastically improved the amount of packages they offer. The Only Ubuntu Linux weblog has a very detailed introduction and tour that walks you through how to install Automatix. The tour has tons of screenshots to help you on your way.
