New Linux User

Are users too lazy to tweak?

I recently wrote a blog entry asking what makes using a Linux distro a sucky experience. The comment I got asked why I didn’t try Gyachi or Kopete so that at least I could use the webcam feature or view a friend’s webcam on occasion. The simple answer I have for it is that I don’t need it much so I won’t bother.

What is really the user’s attitude towards searching for answers to their own questions? I realized that I was lazy enough to not care whether or not there is a way. I mean, if I really tried an online search, I suppose something would come up, right? But no. Flat out I told my friend that I couldn’t. Ouchies! That was what I got for being too lazy to care.

But I suppose it’s not just in my case. Other people probably felt the same way and they didn’t ask someone they know for help or they didn’t even go online to see solutions to their problems. They just know it’s there. That it is a problem but that’s it. Not much effort is given to searching for an answer so how about when it comes to implementing the solution? I doubt it.

Linux distros are getting easier to use with each passing year. I haven’t tweaked anything on my laptop in the last release of Ubuntu just so I could make hardware work. Some of the changes I made are just aesthetic, you know. Adding screenlets, installing Openbox and stuff like that. I didn’t even compiled a kernel for optimizing the performance of my system. -_-; And yet I don’t feel the need to do so. Is it just plain laziness or could I really justify it by saying that it’s because I have other things I could focus my energies on? Hrmm.

What do you feel like when you encounter problems while using Linux?
