Beryl Project

The Beryl Project is a community fork of Compiz. If you don’t know what compiz is it essentially lets you use neat effects on your desktop eg. windows wobble when moved, transparency, etc.

More interestingly the latest nvidia beta drivers work with Beryl with no need for XGL or AIGLX, which means that I can still get accelerated 3D rendering. This means that I can still run all of my favourite games.

Install instructions for various distros exist within the wiki.

A feature I forgot to mention is all the tools that ship with beryl, for example beryl-manager sits in your notification area and allows you to switch to none compiz mode or change settings in seconds.
