Can’t live without Emacs

Every time I install Linux I make sure that I install Emacs. Actually even on Windows, I install Emacs
It’s a text editor which people say is hard to learn. They have a point but you see, Emacs is one fascinating text editor. It has a lot of features and extensions or macros. It’s really complex and amazing all at the same time. Some people call it an ‘operating system’ and that it has everything but the kitchen sink. Some people are said to live in Emacs.
I blame a friend for introducing me to Planner-el, a planner for Emacs. And there are really so much more that I love about Emacs but maybe it’s because I am such a fangirl.
Emacs lets me do the following:
- Organize my tasks and notes - via Planner, Remember and Org mode.
- Play music through EMMS
- Commit files to the repository via psvn
- Browse stuff on the intarwebs
- Open a terminal!
- Chat on IRC by using ERC then connecting to bitlbee.
- Listen to myself rant by talking to the Emacs Doctor.
- Play a game or two — Snake, Tetris, among other things. I could play Nethack too but I am not good at it.
- Manage my files.
There is so much more and you could check out the Emacs Wiki for that. This is but a short list but I guess I’d just like to say that Emacs is definitely one app that I really must have.
And thanks to Linux I got to use it and love it as well. ♥

Geez, Clair. You make it hard for this old Vi(m) user, dontcha. I mean, I LIKE you, and respect you, and the you go and post this *sniff*. I thought we were friends, man!!! I just don’t know you anymore!!!!

Anyway, all the usual vi vs emacs crap out of the way, i had JUST finished looking at xkcd.com - the latest cartoon was uncannily prescient! http://xkcd.com/378/
Ahh..another blurry eyed emacs users, when will you people learn that the only true editor for Linux is VI.
Hi, timelady!
Hehehe. I use both emacs and vim actually. But more of emacs than vi/m. The modes in vim get me confused sometimes so I would actually use nano more than vi/m. Sorry! *holds up a huge peace sign* The timing of the xkcd comic is perfect~! *laughs*
Hi, Ryan.
Yes, I am a blurry-eyed Emacs user. But it doesn’t mean I won’t ever use vi. I take it that you’re a vi user like timelady. Good for you:) You’ve found a text editor that suits your needs and wants. I found my own too.
Claire, stop that right now. You are spoiling a good Holy war ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editor_war ) by being sweet and reasonable - thats just not the done thing;)
@timelady
Now that might be proper behavior doncha think?
Well, I could always say “Emacs is teh best editor in the whole universe!”
No mate, there was opinion, sure, but no arrogance or vitriol. Epic fail at being a zealot there;)
@timelady Well, for someone who’s trying to take over the world through the help of chibi-fied drawings and cute plushies, I am not sure if I could come up with enough arrogance and vitriol
