Custom Linux with Nimblex

This is funky stuff: you could customize Nimblex so you could have your own Linux distro!

Nimblex is based on Slackware and uses the K Desktop Environment (KDE). You just need a browser with Flash enabled on it. When you go to the Nimblex customization site, you will see the various options you have. You could choose the office suite, the instant messaging tool, and so on. I tried it out and I am currently downloading the iso. It will take me an hour or so to finish downloading it and hopefully the internet connection won’t be wonky.

Requirements:

  • Good internet connection.
  • A cd-burning tool.

Choices you can make:

  • your favorite tools
  • your wallpapers
  • your language settings
  • your username and password

Note: When you create an iso, it will be deleted after 6 hours. It’s just given enough time for downloading.

My co-worker said, what’s up with this? I told him that, hey, this is something cool! If you’re a teacher, you could create a customized CD with the tools that you recommend to your class. That way, your students will have more or less the same stuff so they could probably learn with the same pace, more or less. That or you want to have a particular setup disk that you could use each time you’re somewhere else.

I haven’t tried making a custom distro yet. Except for this one. Stay tuned for later experiments!

Edit: It doesn’t require Flash. Sorry. My bad.

Florin: I edited the entry. Sorry about that. I think I got confused somehow. :(

  1. [...] Via New Linux User, Nimblex is an ultra-light Slackware-based distro that lets you customize your own installation, then provides a download link to that custom iso for 6 hours. The customization tool is a simple Flash interface. I haven’t tried it yet, but it seems pretty cool. [...]
