    Ahem, its an acronymn! It’s G-N-U! :P
Unless your wanting to impersonate the mascot? :D Aka “large African antelope having a head with horns like an ox and a long tufted tail”.
Only then will I allow your “Guh-noo!” :P

    “Guh-noo!” to you too. :D

Laff..it’s not up to me. RMS himself named it and you can see his *very* clear explanation at the FSF link above :)

I am curious about what you think it’s an acronym for?

  3. Jon says:

Argh…I should read my own links before writing.

I agree – it’s a recursive acronym for ‘Guh-noo is Not Unix’. But that doesn’t change the pronounciation of GNU :)

  4. craig says:

I should have read that link too. lol.
I still think it should be G-N-U since we’re not talking about the animal…

  5. Jon says:

I think they might be talking about the animal. The GNU appears to be their mascot.

    What a tangled web…

  6. meman says:

Actually, if you read your link it says “it is pronounced g-noo, as one syllable with no vowel sound between the g and the n.”

So I don’t think “Guh-noo” is right either since it implies the vowel sound. No?
