How Do You Sync Your iPod with Your Computer?

Just wondering because I am getting an iPod. (It’s a long story.) In any case, I read that Rhythmbox could. Same thing goes with Banshee. However, those two don’t seem to support videos so now I am thinking that I should probably go with Gtkpod. I’ve never had an iPod before so I am quite used to the drag-and-drop copying and pasting of files to a microSD card I put on my DS Lite’s DS TT card and I run Moonshell on it. That is what I have been used to. This time around, I need an application to synchronize my media files. Maybe help me out with your recommendations?

For now, I think that Gtkpod suits my needs. But other recommendations are welcome. Whether it’s a command line tool or something with GUI, I know that there is still probably a whole slew of options out there. What worked for you? I’d like to know. And it would be nice if you could share it with the rest of the world so we all know if we should try something new for syncing files.

I use gtkpod. And gPodder for podcasts (good stuff). They don’t get along too well (gtkpod has to rebuild the database every time I’ve used gpodder before), but it does all I could possibly need.

For music I use Banshee, and it reads the music from the iPod and plays it well, too. I’ve done some syncing with Banshee, and it seems to work alright, but I trust gtkpod better. Though I might just be picky and neurotic.

(I have a 5th gen video ipod, so not exactly the newest thing around haha).

Clair, what I did was download iTunes to my laptop (or PC, whichever you’re using). Once iTunes is downloaded, and you have stored songs/videos in there, you plug in your ipod in your PC, the iTunes will detect your iPod and usually sync it automatically. If not, at the lower right hand corner, you will see a SYNC button. Click it and you’re done! :)

If you’re iTunes is not open (or launched), the moment you plug in your iPod, it will automatically launch the iTunes and sync.

    Hope this helps! :)

iTunes won’t work- this is Linux. I use Banshee- but I’m interested in reading more about GTKpod

Clair, I have Gpodder to be excellent at syncing my computer with my ipod. No drag and drop. And I believe it supports videos.
