New Linux User

HP Mini 110, Dell Mini 10, Moblin

I read an article about the comparison of some netbooks and the operating systems installed on them. The article seems to have a favorable review of the HP Mini 110 Mi edition because it seems to like how its Dashboard works. The Mi is running a Linux based on Ubuntu and its user interface which is basically an aggregation of the user’s recently received emails, thumbnails of favorite websites, as well as the favorite applications of the user.

The review of the HP Mini 110’s Mi edition looks interesting and it does remind me a little of Moblin because of its different approach to giving a desktop interface to its users. One thing I don’t like about the Mi is that it will only be available with an SSD. As much as I suppose that SSDs are great for netbooks, I’d rather have a hard disk so that I won’t have to carry a separate external drive when I need a huge amount of files. After all, netbooks generally don’t have optical media drives. The article also reviewed Moblin. It also seems to have a favorable review of Moblin.

The article reviewed the Dell Mini 10. But it was mainly a criticism of how the display looks like. However, the author did add that trying Ubuntu Netbook Remix on it did seem better.

The article criticizes that netbooks with Linux have difficulty with external devices like printers, ipods and the like. I think that there’s hope yet! Because there are inprovements that I’ve been seeing in Ubuntu and Moblin looks like an awesome project. I am actually looking forward to using Moblin in the coming days.
