It’s official — Dell to go with Ubuntu

Earlier this week, I mentioned the rumor that Dell was going to ship Ubuntu pre-installed on several lines of its personal computer segment. Well, Dell announced on its Direct2Dell weblog that they have reached an agreement with Canonical to ship Ubuntu 7.04. The computers will be available for consumer purchase in a few weeks. There hasn’t been an official press release (to my knowledge) yet. Has anyone heard how much this will drive down the cost of a Dell? Please share in the comments.

In February when Dell launched IdeaStorm as forum for customers to contribute ideas for product offerings, we received overwhelming feedback that customers wanted Linux on desktops and notebooks.

As part of an overall effort to update our Linux program, today we are announcing a partnership with Canonical to offer Ubuntu on select consumer desktop and notebook products.

  1. [...] Dell’s recent announcement to sell personal computers loaded with Ubuntu left us wondering what models would be available. Well, Dell finally gave us just the information we were craving this week. The following is a bit of information revealed by Jeremy’s Blog: We will be launching a Linux based OS (Ubuntu) on the E520, 1505 and XPS 410 starting next Thursday, 5/24. We expect these systems to be less than 1% of our OS mix for the entire year which is ~20,000 systems annually. Please cover the huddle deck below with your team by EOB Sunday. If any questions come up, please let me know so I can address them before launch. [...]
