As the results indicate, seems like those who read/visit this blog use Ubuntu. But it doesn’t mean that it’s “the” distro because there are still others distributions of Linux out there and I still find it amazing up to this day as to how communities build them for particular groups of users.
Care to talk about your current favorite distro? Please post some comments and one of these days, I plan to post about them here so we could have other kinds of discussions about them.

Although I’ve been a Kubuntu fan for a while, we’ve been having issues installing various distros on our DIY 64-bit AMD machine. Forget Windows! Nothing seemed to work seamlessly…until we got to Sabayon. We’re now fans. No need to hunt down any drivers/codecs. It’s all installed from the start. I’m happy with Kubuntu on my old laptop, but I’ll be buying a new desktop system within the next few months. And it’ll have Sabayon on it.
@KSAugustin: Really? Wow! That’s good for you. Although, of course, others would disagree on codecs. Some would rather stay pure, so to speak. In any case, am glad you found Sabayon to suit your needs.
Just curious: Windows didn’t work well with your DIY 64-bit AMD machine?
I’m running Ubuntu, sometimes Xubuntu, but I was very impressed with LinuxMint. When I get a new computer I might use that instead. Visually it is much better, and I think the panels & menus are better organised, but at the same time it’s so similar to Ubuntu that I can still make use of the fantastic Ubuntu forums.
First, thanks for a great site!
It’s no surprice Ubuntu ended up on top in this poll. It is relatively polished, newbie-friendly and got a huge mind-share (it’s currently “in”).
But my current favorite is Debian Etch – because it is almost as easy to install as Ubuntu, but more stable and less buggy. My laptops now run so smooth, and they’re both on Debian Etch.
What even surpriced even more is that it is really easy to make a net-install with Debian! It’s just painless. Whether you burn a “businesscard-CD-R” or boot from a few floppies (which I had todo on on eof the laptops because it doesn’t boot from a CD) to start the net-install – it just works!
@TimVB: Coolness. I’ve never tried Mint before. Hrmm. Which reminds me, we should be evaluating Mint in the office.
@Mats: Yeah, Debian is nice. Ah really? Both laptops on Debian Etch? Good, good.
Thanks for sharing your Linux experience!
