New Linux User

Linux on phones in 2008

Articles have been talking about the possibility of Linux in phones for the coming year. However there are also those who wonder if there will be fragmentation.

For me, Linux on mobile phones would be great because it would mean that users don’t have to stick with proprietary stuff like Windows Mobile. It means another choice. And eventually it could mean freedom in so many ways. However, it’s not just about the operating system on the smartphones. There’s also the matter of the entire user experience. Usability would be one issue especially since mobile phones enable people to do a lot of things like make transactions and keep in touch. And how these things could be done by users is something that would be most important and most relevant to them. Sure, Linux would probably bring down the cost of smartphones. But that will just be the beginning, if you ask me.

I’d like to try using one of the smartphones with Linux. I surely would like to hope that the prices wouldn’t be too expensive by the time the smartphones are shipped here in the Philippines and distributed by retailers.
