Through Slashot: New iPod Checksum Cracked, Linux Supported:

“After 36 hours of reverse engineering, the method for producing the checksum on new iPods has been discovered.”

References point to the Amarok site and Backdot.com

Sounds like anyone with iPods or who are wanting iPods might not have such a big dilemma as I thought. My friend and I were just talking about it earlier and he said that maybe someone will figure it out by December. But no! They already figured it out hehe. My friend has one of the older iPod video units and he seems to like it a lot and uses Rhythmbox to manage it. If ever I do decide to use an iPod, I’d probably try to manage my music with Amarok, as I like its user interface better.

Regardless of whatever your beliefs are when it comes to issues regarding open source software and proprietary software, if your using an iPod, you’re not stuck without any support.
