MacBook Air or Asus EEE?

Asked by Juned of A Feed is Born, I replied that the Asus EEE suits my needs for going mobile. The MacBook Air is just waaaaay too expensive, if you ask me. The Asus EEE might not really be enough for certain aspects of my job but at least I could keep communicating with the client if I need to. I might not want to buy an Asus EEE now but given the choice, I’d take the Asus EEE over the MacBook Air. Really.

I don’t really need the uber fancy graphical user interface of the Mac. The Asus EEE’s operating system has an office suite, a media player, etc. In terms of hardware, I don’t really need that much memory nor a graphics card. (I’ve never used a gaming machine so I wouldn’t know or feel the difference!)

Lia wrote the thoughts of the b5media tech channel bloggers with regards to the decision between a MacBook Air and Asus EEE. I should probably put a poll on the sidebar and read your thoughts here on this blog entry.

I would easily take the Asus (hint, its my birthday soon people! ;) ). I love its specs, and its stats. Want.
Macbook Air – so cynical with its non user removable battery. So deficient in anything amazing but wow look at that thinness. Typical Apple, shiny as hell, but to be honest, just not what it could be, and damn, you will pay for what could make it better.

My choice would be Asus EEE. I don’t think an ultra-lightweight and ultra-portable computer should be viewed realistically as a primary work computer, but as something that’s super easy to haul around yet still can handle most everyday functions. If the Asus can do this all for less that 25% of the cost of the Air, I see no reason not to pick it. With the money I save I can go and buy a decent full-size laptop for working at home.

@timelady Happy birthday! :D I hope you get an Asus EEE for your birthday ;) The battery is another issue. Geh~

@doug You have a point. There’s that thing about not looking at an ultraportable as a primary work computer but for people who are really on the go too often, it might be considered a special case. I guess my thinking is that I’d rather have just one ultraportable machine for everything but if I can’t afford it, two machines might be fine. :) With the money saved, you could get a really powerful desktop machine and then some.
