Poll Question for September: Favorite messaging client

What is your favorite messaging client on Linux? I’d like to know why and in particular, what are the advantages for you.

Choices are:

  • Pidgin
  • GyachI
  • Kopete
  • Empathy

I’ve only listed down those that I know of and have tried at one point in time or another. Right now, I’d have to admit that I am still using Pidgin mainly for everything. I couldn’t switch to Empathy yet because I still don’t know what’s wrong with it and as I’ve been busy with work, I haven’t been able to give it much time either. But I’d so love to use Empathy because of voice calls. Even though I have a Skype account, I’d rather use Google Talk’s voice chat feature because most of my contacts are there.

I suppose that the popularity of messaging protocols might vary from country to country but I’d still like to know what your favorite messaging client is. :)

I’ve tried Empathy, just to check out wether voice chat works on the msn-network. It didn’t, so I think it doesn’t really has more advantage to me and it takes more bytes out of my memory than Pidgin.

    Pidgin! the best!

I have used gaim for several years and saw no reason to switch until it was renamed to Pidgin, which I am using now. It offers all a need.

Would you believe, I’m still using GAIM? And right now it’s not showing my photo (avatar). Hay!

@rq Hi, there! Glad to see you’ve got a Linux-netbook blog :D I’d love to read it more often. I am also using Pidgin and I really like it a lot. :D The only thing I’d like to happen with Empathy is for me to have voice chat, actually. Maybe there’s a way for Empathy and Pidgin to combine forces and develop and awesome app.

@MeikahDelid Maybe you could check your account settings. And let’s see if I could drop by your office to check that dilemma :D

@aqeeliz Am glad to see another Linux blogger :D

@Jeroen Right now, I have similar sentiments. Maybe if I could do voice chat via Empathy, I actually might use it more often. But Pidgin has a better interface for me now. The fact that it suggests a list of contacts when I type the first few letters is already quite helpful for me.
