Switch on your appliances using Linux

Free Software Magazine has an informative article giving us an overview of how to automate appliances in your own home. I know of people who would like something like this. I watched one of the sequels of Home Alone and there was one where they had a remote control which basically switched or opened practically everything in the house. (Or was it voice-activated? It was definitely one or the other…) It was really amazing! Now we can do something similar if we have a server, heyu (a software used for home automation), X10 devices and other stuff, depending on which appliances/devices you want to control. You could set up scripts that could set the triggers for turning the devices on/off. And you could also do funky magic with your DVRs, if you love watching videos.
I supposed it’s practical too if you have a computer in practically every room. And if you and your housemates really like this kind of thing. Maybe others would get freaked out to hear a music file playing the moment they enter the door or when lights are suddenly turned off. But think about the possibilities of experimenting with new ways to interface with your appliances! Wouldn’t that be really awesome? I would think so!
