Drivel
I’ve heard about Drivel through friends who have been using LiveJournal and they use Drivel as their blogging client. It’s a really awesome client for LiveJournal because you could really choose which user icon to use, as well as select your privacy filter.

I’ve been using Drivel for the longest time but I’ve realized that there are other tools I could use for blogging. And here’s a short comparison of the three tools I’ve used.

Drivel

I’ve heard about Drivel through friends who have been using LiveJournal and they use Drivel as their blogging client. It’s a really awesome client for LiveJournal because you could really choose which user icon to use, as well as select your privacy filter. Your custom filters are actually reflected in the choices. Aside from that you could choose which blog you’d be posting to. It could be that you’re writing for your community’s blog.

However, there is still something lacking in Drivel when it comes to WordPress. You could not input tags to your blog entry. It’s just that it’s so easy to select your blog right away when you launch the application. The thing is that it makes you choose which blog you’d be writing for from the beginning. I think this might be because different blogging platforms have different options, etc.

Tomboy

First and foremost it’s a sticky note application for the desktop. It’s very easy to take notes with it as well include some formatting of your text immediately. But because it’s primarily a sticky notes application, you cannot retrieve your recent blog entries. And you could just selectively post whichever note into your blog after you’ve written it.

Then again, it’s not made to be a blogging client. This is why I could not really use it as a primary blogging client.

BloGtk

This blogging client, so far, is the nicest one for WordPress. I read somewhere that you could also use it to post on LiveJournal but I doubt that it will be as awesome as Drivel. It might not have a rich text editor but it does have buttons that could help you with mark-up. You could even post blog entries with tags in its advanced tab. Also, you could preview your blog entry just to make sure that it will look the way you want it to be.

So at the end of the day, I really am going with BloGtk. It is the niftiest one that I could use with WordPress. As much as I use LiveJournal, I post to my WordPress blogs more. If you’ve got other blogging clients to recommend, I’d be more than happy to try them out.

So I was using Tomboy the other day when I realized how weird it was. All of a sudden it was not posting to my blog and it just quit each time I tried to post a particular note. I tried so hard to figure out what the culprit was. It was “>” (or the greater than symbol) I used that character to draw an arrow of sorts on my blog entry.

Apparently it won’t post a note with that character. I am not sure why. I am not sure what is a good work around if you do need to post a blog entry with that character. Maybe it didn’t post because it was something used in HTML? I should probably read up on bug reports to find out if other characters will make posting to a blog problematic. In any case, just avoid it so you won’t experience what I did.

Another thing is that you can’t post links with link text to other articles through Tomboy. You will end up posting with the entire URL showing. So using this as a blogging client works best if you will work mainly with text.

Another nifty thing you could do with Tomboy: Synchronize your notes with another computer via Dropbox

tomboy and dropbox

I know I’ve blogged about Dropbox before because it’s one of the nicest things I’ve encountered in the past year. If you haven’t tried Dropbox yet, maybe the fact that you could synchronize your Tomboy notes on Dropbox will help you appreciate it more?

starrynote.com’s guide to using Tomboy with Dropbox will teach you how easy and awesome it is to do that. Of course it requires you to have a Dropbox account as well as Tomboy installed on your computer.

If you know of other ways to use Tomboy, maybe you could comment and share them here. Or trackback to this blog entry. Thanks and have great time using Tomboy.

Earlier I tried to write a blog entry using BloGtk but it was difficult for me to select a category. Anyhow, it seems to be working fine now. So yes, how does one use BloGtk?

using blogtk

Set your blog information through the Edit menu where you could add accounts and change settings. You need the following information:

Blog URL: http://yourwordpressblogurl.com/xmlrpc.php

Username: Your username on the blog

Password: Your password on the blog

Blogging System: Choose “Movable type”

The thing about BloGtk is that you only have three options for the type of Blogging System: Blogger, Metaweblog and Movable Type. WordPress users must choose Metaweblog in order to post a blog entry.

Click the Save button so these things are saved in the application.

Click OK

Connect to the blog you want to write to. You could do this by going to the File menu and selecting Connect.

Start writing the title of your blog entry. And you could make the post itself. You could even select the category of your post. If you want, you could also add tags. On the Advanced tab, Keywords has space and this is where you set your tags.

Some advantages of BloGtk over Drivel:

Preview. There is a preview tab so you have a better idea of what you’re drafting is already ok or not.

There’s a way to add tags because of the keywords option. That’s good because that means I don’t really need to ask for help about that.

I do hope that this application will just work properly after all this.

Recently, I wrote And yes, one could be OS agnostic. Turns out that there’s already a blog of the same name. OS Agnostic. The blogger is Karin Dalziel who is an LIS student and she has her musings on her field of expertise in . Aside from that, she her artworks too.

The great thing about reading Karin’s blog is that she talks about her experiences with OSes, Ubuntu in particular, as well as her passion for spreading more knowledge about the Creative Commons. There are times that she’s been having some OS woes and yet she still explores the technology for her everyday use. And that’s something I enjoy reading about aside from how-to’s and Linux news. Everyone has a story to share and she does share hers so I hope that you too will do the same. It might be that I don’t know about certain Linux topics and you know about them so it’s better that you show me what you know so I could learn from you too.

I’ve been blogging about the things I like and the things I learn. It’s because I enjoy doing that. I see that in Karin too. For me, she’s one of the encouraging Linux users to read because she’s saying things that happen and what she has learned from the experience. It’s actually something that helps other Linux users because it does leave traces of us and Linux online.

What I also love about her blog OS Agnostic is it’s tagline:It’s not the OS you use, but what you do with it that counts. Agree or disagree? Maybe you have other thoughts you’d want to share so I hope you’d send some comments and I’d moderate them as soon as I can.
