If you’ve been wondering where to get free audiobooks the legal way, then it’s time to check out LibriVox. The audiobooks here are available in mp3 or ogg formats so you could easily download them to your own computer and listen to them. And the nice thing about this is that there’s a collective team of people who volunteer to read these books aloud so that we could enjoy listening to them for free. You might not be getting the latest commercial books in audio format but these books are within the public domain already so that’s still very cool.

LibriVox has the Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg as its partners. Ah yes, Project Gutenberg! I’ve been getting books in text file formats from that site because there are classics that I really just want to read over and over.

What I like about the entries they have about books is that they put other relevant information which links to various sources so that you know if that’s the book you really want to download. For example, I wanted to get a copy of the Daddy Long Legs book from their site so I checked out the LibriVox page on Daddy Long Legs. So yeah. They linked to the Wikipedia page of the author, as well as the novel’s.

Every so often they also update their blog for audiobooks which you might be interested in. And just 3 days ago, they listed a Halloween-themed set of books you might want to listen to in preparation for the occasion. Macbeth and Famous Modern Ghost Stories are included in the list. Too scared to get them? Don’t worry! They’re DRM-free. ; )

So why am I writing about this audiobooks site? Isn’t this blog supposed to be all about Linux? Well, I thought that it’s good to also point out other projects inspired by the Free Software Movement.

Personally I only started becoming aware of the need to keep track of all these things. I think it’s partly because I am running out of shelf space. And some of my books ended up on my sister’s shelves. Tsk, it’s really time for me to sort things out!

Tellico is a collection manager, not limited to books.

Tell It to Tellico…

And Tellico will save just about everything you enter in the application. This is not a difficult application to use. It already has pre-set collection data entry forms. The ones that are already pre-set include the following:

book collections

video collection

music collection

coin collection

card collection

stamp collection

There are other defaults you could use. And you could even make some. If for example you want to document your collection of your figurines or maybe even other stuff. You could use custom fields for your particular collection. It’s up to you to define which fields are needed for your documentation.

You could create custom fields

There’s supposed to be a way to be able to search for particular books or music from the internet but it doesn’t seem to work with me. Internet’s flaky these days so I would have to check it again another day to be sure. But there is a form for you to fill out and then you could choose from the results which should be in your collection.

And you could even have different reports that summarize the information about your collection. You could group the entries according to the filters you want. It’s really nifty. : ) You could even save those reports in HTML so you could upload them on your website, if you want to share such information with friends, family and fellow hobbyists.

Try Tellico and see how you like it. : )

The book promises “Over 300 Tips, Tricks, Hints and Hacks” for Ubuntu users and those who are thinking about using Ubuntu.

The excerpts of Ubuntu Kung Fu are on Pragmatic Programmer’s website. I think that the excerpts are great. I even learned about the screenlets and the desktop recording function. I never knew about these things until tonight. Though there have been desklets from before, I think that screenlets look more polished than the desklets I’ve seen before. As for the desktop recording tool which saves in animated GIFs, I think it’s really cool because you could be clearer about communicating things when you’ve got visuals to help you say things. It would help you troubleshoot better or, in some cases, just showcase what’s going on if you just want someone else to have an idea, let’s say for posting it on your blog, etc.

I’ve got to admit that the excerpts make me think about getting the PDF + printed copy. But for now, I’d probably recommend getting it in PDF form because I think that the price fairly reasonable. Handy for those of you who are still new to Ubuntu and would prefer to have a handy resource available before going online and digging through various forums and mailing lists. Also handy if you’re the type to keep the copy at the home desktop for your family to read through while you’re away and out of reach. It seems that from the excerpts, it’s a pretty straightforward book which new users and not-so-new users could learn from.
