This is specifically for your computers, not the ones on your server. I have been using different wikis in order to organize my thoughts over the years. I notice that all of them are quite different from each other. It’s not just how the applications behave, it’s also the way users need to interact with them, as well as the overall functionalities. Because I am curious, here’s a poll and please feel free to answer it as you see fit. There’s no right or wrong answer on this one.

Which desktop wiki are you using?

Tomboy
Zim Wiki
Tiddlywiki
I run and Apache and have Pmwiki
I run Apache and have Dokuwiki
Others (Please comment so you could indicate what it is)

Display Poll Results

If you’re one who’s testing different kinds of applications, I think it’s still ok to join the poll. Especially if you catch yourself using these PHP-based wikis on your computer often enough. I myself would still use Apache to run different kinds of PHP-based applications. Including wikis, that is. Two of the most common ones I know of are Pmwiki and Dokuwiki. I think that those wiki engines are available in the Ubuntu repositories for download and installation.

There are really the desktop-based wikis too like Zim Wiki and Tomboy. Those two are quite similar because they both have project groupings that you could use to make sure that the files don’t get mixed up in any way whatsoever. When it comes to desktop based wikis, I think that they are both good. It’s just that one has to make sure that they fit the needs of the users. Else, it’s just useless. And I think that both of them actually have good potential.

If you have comments, questions and suggestions, please feel free to comment below.

I’ve been trying to regularly post on this blog and so far, there’s one idea I’ve been keeping up with more or less and that’s Funny Friday. The alliteration is enough to keep me interested in looking for funny stuff, whether it’s about Linux items or quotes, and make sure I post them on a Friday. Those funny stuff I’ve looked for have helped me think of potential gifts for friends and co-workers who use Linux are very proud of it. Also, some of the humorous stuff I find get me more interested in other concepts or tools or distros so that’s one good thing I get from that theme.

Are there other themes you’d like to see here? So far I’ve been trying to keep on posting about new or not so well-known applications that look useful especially to new Linux users and those who really just need specific types of applications.

I was thinking of themes like the following:

Wacky Wednesdays – Could be some of the most outrageous Linux news and/or tips. Could be fake or real. The thing is it has to be wacky and/or outrageous.

Tuesday (or Thursday) Tips – Instead of Tip of the Week, it could be scheduled for a particular day. There are a lot of Linux tips ranging from choosing a desktop environment to what could be a way to manage your own files. It could be a way for readers to share tips with each other.

Polls. Have you missed our online polls? If you have any particular topic you’d like to have a poll on, then give me your suggestions. I am open to them, as long as they are Linux-related. It could be a poll question that’s been bugging you for ages or something that you’re just curious about.

Link days. I do have days when I just link to all sorts of news and information. No themes yet though. Just a sample of what I’ve been reading and what I think you’d find useful as Linux users.

So far, that’s it. If you’ve got ideas, please comment or send me an email via c…@b…a.com

The results are:

Downloaded from the Internet – 59 (91% of all votes)
A burned CD/DVD from a friend – 1 (2% of all votes)
Bought online – 2 (3% of all votes)
From a magazine subscription – 1 (2% of all votes)
Ordered DVD’s for free! – 12 (3% of all votes)

Total Votes: 65
Two people said they ordered free DVDs! XD It’s an easy way of getting a pressed copy of a distro you like. Especially if you don’t have the bandwidth for downloading an iso. Thanks for participating, folks. Watch out for the next poll question!

Do you buy Linux DVDs online? Or do you ask someone to burn a copy for you?
Whether you get them free from magazines, from the Internet or somewhere else, let us know. Especially if you have other sources we don’t know of yet.
My copies are mainly burned CDs or DVDs from friends or downloaded from the Internet. For me it’s the most convenient method. There are times when I get pressed copies from acquaintances or events too. But for the most part it’s people who give me copies and the ones I download.
