Translating Ubuntu docs on Launchpad

I am able to manage my time fairly well these days that I decided to go back to translating Ubuntu docs. I’ve been quite inactive in Launchpad because some projects have taken up my time. Anyhow, translating docs in your native tongue is a really great initiative if you want software to be used by more people. It’s not that people don’t know English. It’s more like, there are other things which could be explained better in one’s native language.

Translating the docs on Launchpad itself is quite easy. You just have to click the link to the particular doc you want to translate. You’d be redirected to the doc with text boxes where you could input your translations. Sometimes, other people also contribute to that particular doc so you could actually see their work too. And if there are similar translations on other docs, especially for parts which are repeated throughout, there would be recommended translations or you could translate it differently altogether.

Even those who are new Linux users could contribute to the translation projects. I am just using Ubuntu as an example. I am sure there are other endeavors in other Linux translations. Maybe you could ask your local Linux user group (LUG) as to how you could pitch in the localization projects. If you are not yet part of a LUG, just search the forums or IRC channel of the community of the distro you’re using so you could meet others who are part of it.
