Trying out Empathy

I envy those who’ve been using the Google Talk client on Windows as well as Yahoo!Messenger. Most of my contacts are there, rather than Skype so I’d love to be able to do voice chat with them from time to time.

My boyfriend read about Empathy and we decided to give it a try. So here’s the deal:

  1. Add this line to your sources.list file:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/telepathy/ubuntu hardy main, or add it via Synaptic.
  2. Do an update. If you were using Synaptic, run an update. If you are comfortable with the command line, do a sudo apt-get update.
  3. Install the following:
    • telepathy-gabble
    • telepathy-mission-control
    • telepathy-stream-engine
  4. Look for it in the Applications menu or run it via Run Dialog.

Adding Accounts isn’t so difficult because it’s very straightforward. The menu will have a space for Accounts and you have to select which protocol you want to use.

Note that if you don’t install the backend needed, you won’t be able to use the protocol you want whether it’s GoogleTalk, or Yahoo!Messenger so you have to check first.

Right now, we are sure that GoogleTalk voice chat actually works but the problem is that my laptop has been having problems with connecting. Argh. We don’t know what really is the reason behind it though. I am hoping that in the coming days we’d be able to figure it out.
