New Linux User

What do you think when you hear “limo”?

Limo – commonly known as the shortened form of the word limousine isn’t just about cars. After all, there’s LiMo – a foundation that is focused on Linux on the mobile. They want to make mobile Linux accessible to mass market phones and not just limit it to the top mobile phones in the market. The foundation encourages open standards and open access as well as innovation.

I don’t have a Linux phone at the moment because I don’t have access to such a phone locally. I’ve read about running Linux on the Treo but I don’t think it’s a practical phone, especially because I am clumsy and might drop the phone. (I’d probably end up spending a whole lot of money for repairs instead of the actual retail cost of the phone.)

In any case, as you can see, Linux is like Windows in the sense that it could also run on the mobile. Some people probably think that it’s weird or too geeky but a phone is another device which needs an operating system. And if you want other apps on your phone too, how will it run? How does it ‘talk’ with your phone about the commands that has to run so you’d see your app? And if you’re someone experimental or very interested in making your own apps or integrating something with a mobile phone’s operating system, Linux might give you that opporunity to really make your project come true. Also, one possibility is that it might make the mobile phone of your dreams more affordable because you don’t really have to pay a lot for the license of the software.
