Who says we can’t show our parents that Linux distros are great?

Well, given that you have hardware that works well with Linux, it wouldn’t be too difficult. Our parents are mainly worried that they won’t be able to work or do the fun things they’ve been so accustomed to on Windows. My mom is addicted to Solitaire and she often checks her email and surfs the net. She’s not into email clients so that’s not an issue. Anyhow, here are some apps to note of:

  1. AnyMeal – For our parents who love cooking and want to organize their special recipes.
  2. Tomboy – Sometimes they look for the equivalent of Post-its and here’s one that even links the notes.
  3. Freecell Solitaire – Of course. We musn’t ever forget to let them know about this.
  4. OpenOffice.org – In case you haven’t installed OpenOffice.org on Windows before, it’s time you show them that they could do a lot of things they’ve been used to on OOo as well.
  5. Evince – PDFs are readable on Linux!

Somehow, we could probably dig up lots of apps to suit their needs. If we would just take time to listen to them and show them there’s nothing to be afraid of when using a new operating system and apps that run on it, they’ll feel more comfortable. I guess that’s one thing that some of us have difficulties with. Maybe our parents might end up advocating Linux because it’s practical (in the financial aspect, as well as educational) and because they like it. :)
