Mac OS 7.5 Goes Portable!

You think you’re a big Mac fan? I doubt you even come close to Neisha Stadelhofer. In one of the strangest emulating attempts I’ve ever seen, she has successfully booted up Mac OS 7.5.5 on her PSP. I had absolutely no idea that these types of projects were even under way and I guess it just shows how out of the hacker loop I am, seeing that both Windows and Linux have also been ported onto Sony’s mobile console.
Patience is a required virtue, as the booting process can take upwards of four hours. Yes, that’s correct, four hours. But the fact that it’s been accomplished at all would make me curious enough to try it. Apparently DOS takes a few minutes to load, followed by vMac status messages that drag on for ages. The screen will blank for probably an hour (ack! seems a little disconcerting), and then you’ll get the usual Mac background.
For those who have no fear of voiding their PSP warranty, you can try out the process yourself. The torrent can be downloaded here and more information can be found on Stadelhofer’s website.

holy crapsticks…I just may….I …just ..may
I’ve got a buddy of mine at work who’s real into modding his PSP with stuff. It’s amazing what you can do with it. He’s even sorta involved in a project that’s allowing streaming MP3s and whatnot, I dunno. He rattled off a bunch of stuff and I kinda lost track. It seems that has been the biggest thing for the PSP right now, not it’s games, not the portable UMD movie disks, it’s how moddable it is. There are even programs to “unpatch” what Sony does to protect it, so you can go back and still futz around with it.
With firmware 1.5 on the PSP, modding it was quite simple and downloading cracked games became child’s play using a buffer overun. Upon the upgrade to 2.0, Sony thought that they patched the PSP only to find that the hackers are about 95%, if not 100%, successful in cracking version 2.0 using an image buffer overun.
Microsoft came out with a “Genuine Advantage” patch that required you to validate your serial number before getting software updates on Microsoft’s website. That was cracked in 24 hours.
The point is, no matter what is put out by a company for security, it will be circumvented nearly instantaneously. The majority of these individuals do it solely for the purpose of facing, and conquering, a challenge.
and they get good jobs for doing so
Q: Why the hell would anyone wanna do that??
A: Because we can! (- Steve Jobs)
