Grease: The Video Game
July 3, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz

It seems like 505 Games has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to bring Grease to our Nintendo gaming platform of choice: Wii and Nintendo DS. As a big Grease fan, I have to say that I find the news intriguing, but I’m not quite sure what such a game might entail. Dancing? Singing?

According to a Paramount spokesperson, the game will take “full advantage of the Nintendo Wii’s motion-sensing controls and microphone and the DS touch screen.” And John Kavanah, the Senior Vice President of Video Games for Paramount Digital Entertainment added, “Grease is the ideal opportunity to reach a broad gaming audience who love to sing, dance and have fun with a party-style game.” So it seems like singing and dancing might be in the cards.
It will be really interesting to see what 505 Games/Paramount come up with in regards to this game. In the meantime, I’m off to play the soundtrack on repeat. Grease Lightning!

Nintendo Breaks Their Own Record Profits
May 7, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz

In these troubled times, with a failing economy and businesses folding left and right, one company is sitting pretty in the shade. This company is Nintendo. Nintendo seems to have swallowed down a big flask of immunity to the whole economic nightmare we’re in. During the fiscal year ending March 31, our dear friends at Nintendo saw a 9.9% sales increase and a 14% operating profits increase.

The Wii hit 26 million units sold, taking the little console that could to the staggering 50 million mark. And let’s not forget the DS. The Nintendo DS sold 31 million, dropping it over the edge of 100 million.
And where there’s consoles there’s games. Software sales were also on the rise: 204 million for the Wii, 197 million for the DS.
Congrats, Nintendo.

The British continue to prove that casual gamers are really the bulk of video game buyers. Despite the solid game reviews for X-men Origins: Wolverine, the Hugh Jackman flick-to-game offering is still not able to top the charts. Wii Fit maintains its 5-week streak as the ruler of all things. While hardcore gamers weep into a pillow about the incomprehensible nature of it all, Nintendo continues to giggle mightily from its thrown of sales pwnage.
Here’s this week’s sales charts from the UK:

- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- FIFA 09
- Wii Play
- Resident Evil 5
- Mario Kart Wii
- Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena

Nintendo DLC: DSiWare, WiiWare, VC

The new updates to Nintendo’s latest slew of DLC are in and if you’ve been waiting at the edge of your seat to find out what’s new in the glorious world of Nintendo this week, well the news is kind of lame. Well, I suppose that’s entirely relative. If games like Penguin & Friends: Hey! That’s My Fish excite you, then this is your lucky day.

Did you wake up this morning and think to yourself, “Wish I had an Animal Crossing calculator or clock”?” Well, Nintendo’s got you covered.
DSiWare is getting a couple of updates this week with:
- Animal Crossing Calculator (1 player, 200 DSi Points)
- Animal Crossing Clock (1 player, 200 DSiPoints)
WiiWare gets Penguin & Friends: Hey! That’s My Fish (Gammick Entertainment, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points).
And the Virtual Console’s got an 80s classic for you: Tower Toppler (Commodore 64, 1 player, 500 Wii Points).
If this update comes as a disappointment, there’s always next time. Happy calculating and clocking, for the rest of you.

Nintendo DSi Sells 600K Units at Launch
April 9, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
Nintendo continues its success streak with the launch of the Nintendo DSi. The little hardware that could, has reportedly sold over 600,000 units (this number includes both US and Europe) during its weekend launch. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata delivered a presentation about Wii Sports Resort alongside Shigeru Miyamoto, and let loose the news that the Nintendo DSi is pretty popular indeed.

The Nintendo DSi is Nintendo’s third iteration of the popular Nintendo DS portable console. This latest version comes with two LCD screens and the addition of a camera (or “eye” …. “i” … DSi …)
Fairly certain Nintendo execs probably have a dance room in which they rock out to their good fortune. Grats, Nintendo.

Plants vs. Zombies: The Music Video

Here at Play Girlz, we appreciate the weird and unusual. More than that, we appreciate zombies. Plants are pretty cool, too. So hearing that PopCap is developing a game called Plants vs. Zombies has been quite glee-inducing. But even more awesome - and bizarre - than a game about plants at war with zombies is a music video about plants at war with zombies. You absolutely cannot go wrong with a video featuring singing flowers and zombies.

Rumor Mill: Netflix for PS3 and Wii
March 26, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
There’s some really good news spinning around in the rumor mill: Netflix might be headed for both the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. For those of you wishin’ and hopin’ and prayin’ for this day to come, well … it’s not here yet, but the rumor force is strong with that one.

Here’s why: New surveys from Netflix have been been traveling through the place where such things travel, and customers were asked whether they wanted the service to become available for both the PS3 and Wii. The service would require a “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” woth $9.99 USD.
So this could point to potentially good news for PS3 and Wii owners. Xbox 360 owners get to sit back and cackle madly from their lair of superiority, since they’ve had this service availablef or a while. Lucky bastards souls.
How do you feel about this possibility?
