Rumor Mill: PSP App Store Coming Soon?
June 15, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
Sources over at Destructoid seem to suggest that Sony will be unveiling a PSP App store for their PSP Go during the Gamescom in Cologne this upcoming August. While there’s been no official confirmation, the information leak tells us that these apps will be limited to 100 MBs, but that the sky’s the limit regarding everything else. Perhaps this is Sony’s way of offering some competition to the increasing portable gaming popularity of the iPhone.
The smaller games and apps would be a great compliment to digital downloads for the PSP Go system. So while only a rumor for now, I’m sure it would be a very welcome addition to any PSP Go owner’s gaming life. Only a few months to go before Gamescom, and hopefully some more official info will leak before then.
Do you hope this one is a true rumor?

Summer’s right around the corner! Or at least, at the cafe down the street drinking some coffee and reading a newspaper. But it’s close. Which means it’s time to grab the suntan lotion, the snorkleling gear and the game controllers, because summer game releases are also coming up soon. So here’s a lowdown of a few games heading to the PlayStation Network in Summer 2009.
Clear some hard drive space and get ready to download.

Trash Panic (PS3): Prove your eco-credentials in this fast and furious puzzle game with a trashy twist. In a junkyard far away, an ever-flowing tide of rubbish threatens to bury the entire place.
-
Detuned (PS3): Music lovers: prepare for an abstract and surreal interactive gaming experience like no other. Set the scene for your favourite music tracks by uploading them to Detuned, the game that lets you make visual accompaniments for your favourite music track.
-

-
PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe (PSP): As the Forest Defender, your job is to protect your flock from an onslaught of monsters by setting up artillery towers as a protective shield against the incoming hordes of invaders.
-
Fat Princess (PS3): Check out the trailer for the “biggest” game release on PlayStation Network this summer - Fat Princess. Play with yourself, or join online battles with up to 32 players - 16 to a team - to save the over-fed royal from your enemy’s dungeon.
-
Savage Moon Pack: Waldgeist: Your mission to protect a remote outer-space mining facility from swarms of hideous space insects is about to become even more savage - with the brand-new Savage Moon Waldgeist pack.
Is it summer yet?

It’s a good time to be a PSP owner. There’s quite a few games coming down the pipe: Rock Band, Assassin’s Creed, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy, SOCOM, Ratchet & Clank, Kingdom Hearts … and if that’s not enough, there’s now two more titles confirmed! The latest come to us from Namco Bandai: Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny.

Tekken 6 for the PSP will feature specialized content and modes. The extent of the features and options hasn’t been revealed yet, so for now anything’s possible.
Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny will feature straight on fighting. Also, at least one new character: Dampierre.
Can’t wait!

EA Announces Dante’s Inferno for PSP
April 22, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
Electronic Arts seems to love the PlayStation Portable. They’ll be releasing the Army of Two sequel for the Sony handheld, and now they’ve just confirmed that Dante’s Inferno will be launching alongside the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. That’s happy news for PSP owners.
How the versions will differ, however, is still a question.

According to the press release, the PSP version of Dante’s Inferno is being developed by the EA Redwood Shores studio and Artificial Mind and Movement (aka A2M).
“Our team and the team at A2M are taking the vision for Dante’s Inferno and translating it directly to the PSP,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer and creative director on Dante’s Inferno. “PSP owners can expect to get the same level of fast, responsive gameplay through all nine detailed and unique circles of hell we are aiming to achieve on the consoles.”
Alighieri’s “Dante’s Inferno” is widely credited for being the work that has defined the western world’s contemporary conception of hell and purgatory. Just like the poem, players of EA’s 3rd person action adventure game will descend through all nine circles of hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery, playing as Dante as they battle through a gauntlet of unimaginable evils, fighting to recapture the soul of his beloved Beatrice.
Ready to go to hell? EA is counting on it.

Stephen Fry to Narrate PSP LittleBigPlanet
April 21, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
If you’ve played the popular game LittleBigPlanet, then you’re familiar with Stephen Fry’s voice as narrator. For those not playing LittleBigPlanet (and why not??), you’ll probably recognize Stephen Fry from Bones - he plays Dr. Gordon Wyatt. And if you still can’t place him, try thinking back to V for Vendetta. Still nothing? You need some more pop culture in your life.

Well, regardless, for those who do know Stephen Fry and love him on LittleBigPlanet (or elsewhere): good news. It looks like we’ll be getting his wonderful voice as narrator once again. He’ll be lending his voice to the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet. Yay!
Confirmation comes via Fry himself, as he’s been tweeting about it.
Awesomeness.

Sony Patents PSP-controlled Car
April 10, 2009 by Ingrid Diaz
Looks like the folks over at Sony had a spark of brilliance according to a new patent discovered. Seems the SCEE has filed for a remote-controlled car that uses the PSP as its interface. Attached to the car is a small camera that sends the image back to the PSP screen.

Uses for the remote-controlled car include the somewhat terrifying but undoubtedly appealing (depending on which side of the situation you’re in) ability to spy on your friends and then upload video to something like YouTube.
How many lawsuits do you think would come out of something like that?
Further uses - and this sounds pretty awesome - is the notion of an “augmented reality” racing game “in which the game recognizes real objects as elements in the racing game.
Now that is awesome and I bet Nintendo and Microsoft will be kicking themselves that they didn’t come up with this first.
Nice one, Sony. This is definitely the way to catch up to the Nintendo DS.

Nintendo Sets Sales Records for November

Nintendo has to be feeling pretty darn proud of themselves. Both the Wii and the Nintendo DS are dominating the sales charts for November, setting records left and right and leaving Microsoft and Sony in the dust. Granted, Microsoft and Sony have nothing to cry about, really. Despite the economic crisis neither company is doing too poorly.
But then, Nintendo is just pwning:
With more than 3.6 million combined systems sold in November, Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ set new hardware sales records, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. The Wii console sold more than 2 million in November, a new all-time record for a non-December month. The Nintendo DS system sold more than 1.56 million in November, which is now the second-highest total for a non-December month in history. The Wii console has sold 15.4 million in the United States since it launched in November 2006, and Nintendo DS has sold nearly 24.6 million in the United States since it launched in November 2004.
The breakdown is as follows:

The beta version of the PSP-to-PS3 Ad-Hoc service has been delayed in Japan. Japanese players were expecting to gain access on October 30 but will now have to wait until sometime in November. PlayStation’s official (Japanese) site comfirms the delay.
The good news is that there’s a video presentation available for those of you that want to know more about the service. How’s your Japanese? Mine’s not so good, but I got the gist. Check it out.
